Tadoussac Bay

We walked into it, and for the life of me
I couldn’t see you. It was as if the sky
crashlanded or clouds had taken the area

by storm. Whiteness ate the gravel,
the hanks of grass, the sun-blistered posts.
We were being erased from the official
account of the morning.
I stumbled forward, calling your name.

We had driven up to talk, air our feelings
all at once. But years of pretending
I was happy left even me guessing
when I meant the words I said to you.

The moment your hand found mine, it was
too late. World and colour parted ways
and the sense of loss spread itself around.
