The woman I would be<br \/>\nIf I were not selfish and an unbeliever.<br \/>\nThis woman arranges gladiolas on the altar<br \/>\nFor every funeral. She is happy to think<br \/>\nOf the risen in the arms of the Blessed Mother.<br \/>\nShe crosses herself with holy water<br \/>\nFrom the shrine at Lourdes.<\/p>\n<p>I am the woman who eats the oranges, peel and all.<br \/>\nWho scoffs at those who want to live forever<br \/>\nIn the sublime light of the Host.<br \/>\nI want morphine dreams and a book of poetry.<br \/>\nI don\u2019t want hope or faith or the charity<br \/>\nOf women with baskets of roses,<br \/>\nOf women who offer cheese to the poor,<br \/>\nOf women who milk the moon for stories<br \/>\nThat I can\u2019t witness. What I give<br \/>\nIs what I don\u2019t want\u2014my mother\u2019s costume jewelry,<br \/>\nThe tiresome novel I couldn\u2019t finish.<\/p>\n<p>To be an imperfect woman is a sorrow.<br \/>\nEven a woman like me will admit<br \/>\nTo a small envy and a larger rejection.<br \/>\nEven a woman, thin with grief, will sit<br \/>\nIn the dark and be lonely.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h5>Katherine<\/h5>\n<p>In the barn loft inhaling emanations<br \/>\nOf the cows. Their gassy farts said to be curative.<br \/>\nShe was desperate enough to attend. To listen hard<br \/>\nWhen Gurdjieff spoke<br \/>\nWith an intensity that could freeze a flock<br \/>\nThe way a sheepdog can, crouching and staring.<br \/>\nShe wrote in her diary, implored and renounced<br \/>\nHer friends. Lawrence called her disgusting<br \/>\nOut of his own cowardice. She drank the hot milk<br \/>\nStarred with filth. Anything. Anything.<br \/>\nShe was still young.
