{"id":9025,"date":"2017-12-22T10:39:47","date_gmt":"2017-12-22T09:39:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=9025"},"modified":"2017-12-22T18:29:43","modified_gmt":"2017-12-22T17:29:43","slug":"four-poems-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=9025","title":{"rendered":"Four poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Future Perfect<\/h4>\n<p>Yesterday he thought the future<br \/>\nwas a tense they taught you in school<br \/>\nwhere if you make a mistake<br \/>\nit isn\u2019t the end of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Well he learned his lesson<br \/>\nGod now give him<br \/>\nhis book bag back<br \/>\nlet him be on his way home again<\/p>\n<p>no voyous at the construction site<br \/>\ntaking his back pack<br \/>\nhis brand new anorak.<br \/>\nAnd no telling Dad <\/p>\n<p>who 1) won\u2019t go to the cops<br \/>\nfor what\u2019s just one more case of extortion<br \/>\nbetween a boy from Martinique<br \/>\nand some lighter-skinned toughs;<\/p>\n<p>2) won\u2019t go to the construction site<br \/>\n&#8230;one brick another brick<br \/>\nanother&#8230;until Dad falls balled-up on the ground<br \/>\nlike a test you failed <\/p>\n<p>yesterday\u2014only yesterday<br \/>\nGod so let him be on his way home again<br \/>\nwith a little pocket money<br \/>\nto buy a treat at the bakery.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4>Collateral Damage<\/h4>\n<p>It listed to the east, liable, the arborist said, to fall<br \/>\ninto the street, stave in cars,<br \/>\na neighbour\u2019s shipshape house and yellow brick wall,<\/p>\n<p>so Friday they came with chainsaws and gloves<br \/>\nand felled it, beginning<br \/>\nwith the high-up bendy branches and bright leaves;<\/p>\n<p>by the afternoon\u2019s end the ash tree was strewn<br \/>\nthigh-deep in the yard,<br \/>\nlimbs and brushwood good for the mulch machine;<\/p>\n<p>and a rabble of garden birds surveyed the debris<br \/>\nwhere that morning<br \/>\ntheir safe nests and lookouts had been.           <\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4>A Good Fence<\/h4>\n<p>Sound of a shovel nicking dirt.<br \/>\nVoices of labourers<br \/>\nsinking posts into wet cement.<\/p>\n<p>Sibilance of aspens in the wind.<br \/>\nSoft-spoken voices speaking<br \/>\nSpanish under soft-spoken aspens.<\/p>\n<p>Shriek of a chainsaw ripping wood.<br \/>\nClang of a hammer striking nails.<br \/>\nShovel thunk against aspen suckers.<\/p>\n<p>Report of a stapler fixing wire.<br \/>\nLaughter bubbling like water<br \/>\ndown a bed of loaf-shaped boulders.<\/p>\n<p>Sound of a gate bolt shot.<br \/>\nSound of a tailgate dropped.<br \/>\nSigh of the gathered up tools.  <\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4>Geese at Chatoux-sur-Seine<\/h4>\n<p>Car locks zapped<br \/>\nI exit the underground<br \/>\ngarage, borrowed mystery<br \/>\nunder my arm.<br \/>\nWhat am I thinking?<br \/>\nTrying not to think.<br \/>\n<em>Not trying<br \/>\nnot to think. Not thinking.<\/em><br \/>\nDoing laps<br \/>\nin the cool pool of myself.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, jet-thrust din.<br \/>\nI crouch then spin<br \/>\nto the smear of green<br \/>\nwhere the river turns<br \/>\npast the football pitch<br \/>\nand see a flock of geese<br \/>\nclear the brush, bank,<br \/>\nand like a single thing<br \/>\nlift<br \/>\ninto the November sky. <\/p>\n<p>At the kitchen dock<br \/>\na driver offloads<br \/>\nwater, shrink-wrapped,<br \/>\npalettes of soda<br \/>\nin desire-red cans. <em>See<br \/>\nthose geese?<\/em> he says.<br \/>\nAnd together we tip<br \/>\nour heads up\u2014but<br \/>\nno sign of a goose now<br \/>\nto riddle<br \/>\nour allotment of sky.    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Future Perfect Yesterday he thought the future was a tense they taught you in school where if you make a mistake it isn\u2019t the end of the world.
