{"id":8908,"date":"2017-12-13T21:28:23","date_gmt":"2017-12-13T20:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=8908"},"modified":"2017-12-22T18:34:45","modified_gmt":"2017-12-22T17:34:45","slug":"two-poems-38","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=8908","title":{"rendered":"Two poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Lapwings in Fallowfield<\/h4>\n<p>They sit with the road\u2019s oily<br \/>\ntang in their nares,<br \/>\ntheir bodies like helmets in grass.<\/p>\n<p>Younger ones look like soil<br \/>\nupon snow and nest<br \/>\nin the adults\u2019 thick feathers.<\/p>\n<p>My sister and I at somebody\u2019s<br \/>\nwedding, when we hid<br \/>\nunder somebody\u2019s dress.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4>Brexit<\/h4>\n<p>The city has been stamped with leaves<br \/>\nand is a mail bag, waiting to be posted somewhere.<br \/>\nHouses, on a hillside, stacked like letters<br \/>\nspilling over so the wind can almost snatch them.<\/p>\n<p>Its streets are grit filled markings on a shoe sole<br \/>\ncambering uneasily at the heel<br \/>\nand worn into themselves like grafted skin.<br \/>\nThe tarmac has a greasy sheen.<\/p>\n<p>Only people\u2019s backs, hunched towards shopping,<br \/>\nconfirm life happens here, wrapped in cagoules,<br \/>\npeople personable as tents zipped shut,<br \/>\ncanvas for the rain to write upon.<\/p>\n<p>They lean into windows lit like oilseed<br \/>\nbelieve they\u2019re holding something by its horns.<br \/>\nTheir houses ache like letters that leave something bad unsaid.<br \/>\nBut now the whole world knows their thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>Theirs was only the stale and temporary discretion<br \/>\nof booths at a polling station.<br \/>\nHouses on the hillside turn to banners<br \/>\nfilling with the wind, which will not take them far.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lapwings in Fallowfield They sit with the road\u2019s oily tang in their nares, their bodies like helmets in grass.
