{"id":8896,"date":"2017-12-13T20:23:59","date_gmt":"2017-12-13T19:23:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=8896"},"modified":"2017-12-22T18:35:08","modified_gmt":"2017-12-22T17:35:08","slug":"teaching-my-mother-to-put-on-a-fitted-sheet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=8896","title":{"rendered":"Teaching my mother to put on a fitted sheet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fitted sheets were not in vogue when my mother<br \/>\nmade her bed all those thousand times<br \/>\nthe bottom sheet and the top identical.<\/p>\n<p>Now when I make my bed I find the words<br \/>\nfor explaining the fitted sheet in my head<br \/>\nand the elastic that holds it taut.<\/p>\n<p>Isn\u2019t it an advantage, I say \u2013 I see<br \/>\nher sceptical look \u2013 that the edges are fixed<br \/>\nwhether you sleep alone or in pairs<\/p>\n<p>and your portion of the sheet is inviolate?<br \/>\nShe says nothing, just a long slow look.<br \/>\nIt will be more difficult to fold for the linen press<\/p>\n<p>where she tied her sheets with ribbons.<br \/>\nSo often I received her wisdom and never<br \/>\ndefended myself. What could I say<\/p>\n<p>to one who knew more, was quick about everything,<br \/>\nthat a bed should be aired for hours<br \/>\nbecause it contains bacteria and moisture<\/p>\n<p>but this sheet I want to give her, to lie<br \/>\ndown on, as taut as a sail<br \/>\non a night voyage, in starlight and moonlight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fitted sheets were not in vogue when my mother made her bed all those thousand times the bottom sheet and the top identical.
