{"id":8856,"date":"2017-12-13T19:43:03","date_gmt":"2017-12-13T18:43:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=8856"},"modified":"2017-12-22T18:36:33","modified_gmt":"2017-12-22T17:36:33","slug":"two-poems-33","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=8856","title":{"rendered":"Two poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>I Rank All the Beautiful Things There Are<\/h4>\n<p>I rank all the beautiful things there are<br \/>\nstarting with self-sacrifice, then supernovas,<br \/>\nthe brain, love, virga, Korean pottery,<br \/>\nlemurs, cuckoo clocks, suits of armour for horses,<br \/>\na child\u2019s first words, mercy, bread, and so on.<br \/>\nThe list extends for miles in knee-high piles<br \/>\nof pages I arrange on my weekends.<br \/>\nBut then I think that comprehensiveness<br \/>\nis better served by a more encyclopaedic<br \/>\npresentation, so in the best morocco<br \/>\nI bind the beautiful things alphabetically.<br \/>\nThe volumes cover fine segments of language,<br \/>\nlimited like thin, bright bands of colour:<br \/>\nPenumbra to Pineapple, Fox to Funerals,<br \/>\nRome to Rum, <em>Antigone<\/em> to Apricot.<br \/>\nEvery shelf groans under the staggering weight<br \/>\nof another shelf, it seems. The accumulation<br \/>\nof items in fixed forms is knowledge itself.<br \/>\nBut then I think that serendipity<br \/>\nis better served by digitising all<br \/>\nmy lists and groupings. I put them in a folder\u2014<br \/>\nthe first step in putting them out of mind.<br \/>\nFive years pass and I remember them.<br \/>\nI look and realise all my views have changed.<br \/>\nI start again: with empathy, then music,<br \/>\ncoral reefs, tornadoes, ice, titanium,<br \/>\nspoken Esperanto, things like that.<br \/>\nI interrogate my past like someone who\u2019s<br \/>\nset an exam for the examined life.<br \/>\nThe only thing I am more than wrong is right.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4>An Abandoned Farm Near Lockhart, New South Wales<\/h4>\n<p>The shearing shed is in good order,<br \/>\nand if it strongly smells of piss<br \/>\nand hums with every kind of fly<br \/>\nthere is, at least the tools still work.<br \/>\nThe heat outside makes me want to die;<br \/>\nin here I\u2019m sure I have already.<br \/>\nTwenty-year-old wool appears<br \/>\nfrom among the roofbeams when I cough.<br \/>\nThere is no black that\u2019s blacker than<br \/>\na wool that\u2019s changed to black.<br \/>\nI say that we should turn the place<br \/>\ninto a working farm museum,<br \/>\nbut I try to turn everything<br \/>\ninto a museum. Yet still<br \/>\nthe moment and the sentiment<br \/>\nare right. They feel so right to me.<br \/>\nOf course they do. I have the hands<br \/>\nand posture of a visitor.<br \/>\nWhat I\u2019m saying is all ego,<br \/>\nand that\u2019s not what farming is or was.<br \/>\n(According to what I am told.)<br \/>\nIt\u2019s selling rather than keeping things,<br \/>\nkilling to sell, nurturing to kill,<br \/>\nand letting self-control be nurtured.<br \/>\n(That\u2019s what I\u2019m told by those who know.)<br \/>\nThe rising damp eats the dado.<br \/>\nAnd in the garden by the house,<br \/>\npersevering, unreliant on<br \/>\nthe absent gardener: plumbago.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I Rank All the Beautiful Things There Are I rank all the beautiful things there are starting with self-sacrifice, then supernovas, the brain, love, virga, Korean pottery, lemurs, cuckoo clocks, suits of armour for horses, a child\u2019s first words, mercy, bread, and so on.
