REYNARDINE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not even the owls had eyes hollower
\nthan mine after the dark had emptied them.
\nThe world woke in the night, full of questions:
\ntrees like widows wringing their hands and keening,
\ngrass whispering rumours around my feet.
\nEven the wind ran off to seek you out,
\npausing just to look and shiver weakly
\nat the loneliness between the night\u2019s ears.<\/p>\n

Everything had given up by morning
\nwhen the sun began its search, and letters
\nsent for you dropped in low reminders
\nthrough the letterbox, mute and indifferent.<\/p>\n

Someone saw you speaking with a man
\nwhose eyes were bright and false as moorlanterns.
\nThey said you followed him, casting off the days
\nas though time had been placed into your palm
\nlike a rounded pebble, old and perfected,
\nto be skimmed over waiting waters.<\/p>\n

 
\n<\/p>\n

It was how she swelled the sail of my throat
\nand led me seawards; how I pulled back taut
\nagainst the boom to save my own distinction.
\nIt was her lovely nets and shining hooks,
\nthe eyes that dragged my tidal mind like moons.<\/p>\n

This bed has been the limit of my longing
\nsince our independence ricocheted.<\/p>\n

And tonight the bald hips of the apple boughs
\nwill ache and the house will sink to its knees
\nand the windows will weep to see the clouds
\nage like silver stomachs under the sky.<\/p>\n

Our poles will hold and shake and try to turn
\nlike the two tears running to meet at my chin.<\/p>\n

To prove our strength we planted stone on stone,
\nand the dam will hold, and she will not come.<\/p>\n
