{"id":7052,"date":"2017-02-11T12:00:48","date_gmt":"2017-02-11T11:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=7052"},"modified":"2017-02-11T14:54:08","modified_gmt":"2017-02-11T13:54:08","slug":"thinning-apples-at-ludag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=7052","title":{"rendered":"Thinning Apples at Ludag"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Thinning Apples at Ludag<\/h4>\n<p>Gone untrimmed, when the yield came down<br \/>\nperhaps I\u2019d think that I was rich \u2013<br \/>\nbuckets and basins running over.<br \/>\nBut all would be small: small blushed skin<\/p>\n<p>small stiff core \u2013 maybe of no use<br \/>\nunless for pickling or stewing<br \/>\nor practising to split them open,<br \/>\nlike a clasped book, with just my hands. <\/p>\n<p>Twenty good apples on each good branch;<br \/>\nthe pruning shears worked in the leaves<br \/>\nanswering no and no again<br \/>\nuntil they cut away to a handful,<\/p>\n<p>all green, and clinging to their stems;<br \/>\nthe wind broke through the tree \u2013 and maybe<br \/>\nI left it barer than I should<br \/>\nbut this was where the thinning led: <\/p>\n<p>there could have been a greater haul,<br \/>\nand yes, I\u2019m sorry how it sounds<br \/>\nbut I wanted something different.<br \/>\nAnd so this is what I did.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thinning Apples at Ludag Gone untrimmed, when the yield came down perhaps I\u2019d think that I was rich \u2013 buckets and basins running over.
