\nBlack dog scraping at the back door.
\nLeft to the elements,
\nthe house lies in state-
\na mouldering woodland creature,
\ndemonstrating each stage of death.
\nSinew stretched to its limits,
\nthe roof folds.
\nThe house ticks.
\nWires run like poisoned veins.
\nVoices course.
\nIf there is a face
\nat the blasted windows,
\nit is difficult to tell.<\/p>\n
The way the house is
\nangers the bored children,
\ncycling this far to fling stones.
\nA girl sits up in her bed,
\nsees the window shiver inwards,
\nher room reduce to broken dolls,
\nleaf-sump, warped boards.
\nA water rat looks up from its feeding.
\nA growl starts in the dog\u2019s throat.
\nWhatever passes through the leaves
\nurges the children to retrieve bikes,
\nscrape shins on pedals.
\nNo one speaks.
\nHurry home but never outrun the feeling.
\nThe girl turns
\nfrom the crow-gone glass.
\nSomeone calls her downstairs.
\nThe dog is let in.
\nThe elements house sighs.
