{"id":7040,"date":"2017-02-11T12:00:46","date_gmt":"2017-02-11T11:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=7040"},"modified":"2017-03-28T12:51:20","modified_gmt":"2017-03-28T11:51:20","slug":"three-poems-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=7040","title":{"rendered":"Three Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Shetland Swop<\/h4>\n<p>I\u2019ll swop you my wheatear<br \/>\nfor your ringed plover,<br \/>\nmy lapwing<br \/>\nfor your rock pippet,<br \/>\nthis bevy of seals<br \/>\nfor your noisy hanging cliff-garden<br \/>\nof two thousand nesting guillemots.<br \/>\nIf you can spare me two miles of pink thrift<br \/>\nI\u2019ll give you a broadside<br \/>\nof tammie nouries and all my spare bonxies.<br \/>\nAs for that plump rain-goose of yours<br \/>\nI\u2019ll swop you<br \/>\nthis sprig of marsh marigolds<br \/>\nand a hatful of eider chicks \u2013 do we have a deal?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4>Japanese Miles<\/h4>\n<p>He goes at walking pace,<br \/>\ntravels Japanese miles,<br \/>\none of which equals<br \/>\ntwo British miles<\/p>\n<p>Through mists<br \/>\nice and snow of the high altitude<br \/>\nhe climbs Mount Gisson<br \/>\nwith a sacred rope<br \/>\nof white paper noosed round his neck<\/p>\n<p>At the summit<br \/>\nhe sleeps<br \/>\non a bed of bamboo leaves<\/p>\n<p>At Support-yourself-on-a-stick Pass<br \/>\nhe wishes he had a horse<\/p>\n<p>At Yoshima<br \/>\nBasho is so overwhelmed<br \/>\nby the beauty of the cherry blossom<br \/>\nand the famous cherry blossom haiku<br \/>\nof earlier poets<br \/>\nhe cannot write one line,<br \/>\nscribe to the world though he is<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;How shall a poet write?<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In an instant,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;like a woodcutter felling a tree<\/p>\n<p>Following no itinerary<br \/>\nhe crosses the ruins<br \/>\nof an ancient dog-shooting ground<\/p>\n<p>On the road to Senju<br \/>\nhe tells the band of concubines<br \/>\nwho asks him for alms<br \/>\n<em>Trust in the Lord Buddha<\/em><br \/>\ngives them zilch cash<\/p>\n<p>Moon-pilgrim,<br \/>\nhe walks for over a thousand miles<br \/>\nuplands and lowlands<br \/>\nvillages and shrines<br \/>\nmountains north of Edo<br \/>\nalong the shores of the Sea of Japan<br \/>\nin all weathers<br \/>\ngathering up tomorrow\u2019s sky to keep it safe<br \/>\nand talking to ghosts of many poets<br \/>\n(the walk is a kind of s\u00e9ance)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>First cold Winter Rain<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;even the monkey seems to want<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;a tiny raincoat<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4>Doors<\/h4>\n<p>Doors locked and barred<br \/>\nto me for years<br \/>\nare suddenly<br \/>\nthrown open in welcome,<\/p>\n<p>doors to forbidden cities<br \/>\nI\u2019ve carried around<br \/>\nin my locked heart<br \/>\nfly open in golden greeting,<\/p>\n<p>I go through<br \/>\ndoorway after doorway<br \/>\ninto treasuries and storehouses<br \/>\nwhere nothing is too valuable<\/p>\n<p>for me to hold, not even<br \/>\nEdmund Blunden\u2019s copy<br \/>\nof John Clare,<br \/>\nwhich he kept with him<\/p>\n<p>those four years in the trenches.<br \/>\nIn the margin<br \/>\nhe has pencilled-in these words,<br \/>\n<em>poeta infelix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<em>(Blunden\u2019s copy of the poems of John Clare is in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.manchester.ac.uk\/rylands\/\">The John Rylands Library<\/a>, Manchester)<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shetland Swop I\u2019ll swop you my wheatear for your ringed plover, my lapwing for your rock pippet, this bevy of seals for your noisy hanging cliff-garden of two thousand nesting guillemots.
