Close to midnight, we finish the first puzzle
\nwe bought from the Arndale. For the first time
\nsince you told me, we try drowning the silence with kissing.
\nIt\u2019s a jigsaw of a Lowry painting, and it\u2019s pretty tough
\nbecause all those half-bent spines and hats coming
\nfrom the mill look the same. I touch your hand,
\nyou touch my lips, parting them like lifting the top
\noff the jigsaw box: smooth, well-worn, easy.
\nIt bothers me how hard it is, all those people
\nbeing the same but slightly different, enough
\nto make it clear you\u2019d messed up after six or seven pieces,
\nbut never to tell exactly where. I wrinkle your clothes
\ninto the floor, deciding it\u2019s easier to shuffle on
\nthan guess who else has done the same.<\/p>\n
The jigsaw wakes me in the night. I can\u2019t stop wondering
\nif we pushed some of the pieces in the wrong places
\nand never noticed, imposing on families displaced faces,
\nlost arms, broken legs, severing siblings clean in half,
\nit bothers me for hours, until I have to get out of bed and check, <\/p>\n
and find you\u2019ve tidied it away
\nand laid out the puzzle for tomorrow evening\u2019s game.
