For the first time<br \/>\nsince you told me, we try drowning the silence with kissing.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s a jigsaw of a Lowry painting, and it\u2019s pretty tough<br \/>\nbecause all those half-bent spines and hats coming<br \/>\nfrom the mill look the same. I touch your hand,<br \/>\nyou touch my lips, parting them like lifting the top<br \/>\noff the jigsaw box: smooth, well-worn, easy.<br \/>\nIt bothers me how hard it is, all those people<br \/>\nbeing the same but slightly different, enough<br \/>\nto make it clear you\u2019d messed up after six or seven pieces,<br \/>\nbut never to tell exactly where. I wrinkle your clothes<br \/>\ninto the floor, deciding it\u2019s easier to shuffle on<br \/>\nthan guess who else has done the same.<\/p>\n<p>The jigsaw wakes me in the night. I can\u2019t stop wondering<br \/>\nif we pushed some of the pieces in the wrong places<br \/>\nand never noticed, imposing on families displaced faces,<br \/>\nlost arms, broken legs, severing siblings clean in half,<br \/>\nit bothers me for hours, until I have to get out of bed and check, <\/p>\n<p>and find you\u2019ve tidied it away<br \/>\nand laid out the puzzle for tomorrow evening\u2019s game.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coming from the Mill Close to midnight, we finish the first puzzle we bought from the Arndale.
