Last time I saw you<br \/>\nthere was still hair on your head but I suppose<br \/>\nyou\u2019re old now and nothing lasts forever.<br \/>\nI think about if I saw you again, how you might look<br \/>\nlike you\u2019re suffering from a terrible illness:<br \/>\nskin all rough like filter coffee paper, eyes sunken into the skull<br \/>\nas if trying to look inward. In this image I have<br \/>\nyou\u2019re bald, forehead wrinkled, happiness retreating<br \/>\nwith the hairline. But what do I know!<br \/>\nYou might be like one of those Hollywood old guys<br \/>\nwhose faces cheat death, muscles growing<br \/>\nlike their property portfolio. I bet you know the sun<br \/>\nall year round and have a swimming pool,<br \/>\nyou son of a bitch, a swimming pool that you swim laps in<br \/>\nto keep fit, drowning back cocktails with some girl<br \/>\nhalf your age who sparkles on your arm. I bet<br \/>\nyou only drink drinks with those little umbrellas in.<br \/>\nI bet you have patio furniture that you can\u2019t find<br \/>\nin a catalogue. All I want to tell you is all that\u2019s ever<br \/>\nhappened. People used to tell me we look alike.<br \/>\nI might never know if they were lying. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4>Killing You off on Public Transport<\/h4>\n<p>Sometimes I imagine you&#8217;re dead when they ask<br \/>\nfor my tram ticket. It&#8217;s harsh, I know:<br \/>\nthe faked call I get from a family member<br \/>\nor police officer, the news of your death handed to me<br \/>\nlike a cocked shotgun. <em>Can I see your ticket?<\/em><br \/>\nhe\u2019ll say, and I\u2019ll sit there, deaf with grief.<br \/>\nI can cry on cue now, my eyes, apples<br \/>\nbobbing in water. I\u2019m wracked with guilt when the conductor,<br \/>\nonce happy in his cap, stands ham-fisted<br \/>\nat my tears, his smile a broken wishbone. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s got to the point where I\u2019m no longer sure<br \/>\nwhy it is I\u2019m crying: if it\u2019s this<br \/>\npantomime death I\u2019ve constructed in my head for you,<br \/>\na sort of cirque du soleil of misfortune;<br \/>\nif it\u2019s the conductor\u2019s face channelling<br \/>\nmy heartache like a circuit; or if it\u2019s these strangers<br \/>\nsharing the seats in front of me, their closeness<br \/>\na cut throat razor. And all this for the sake<br \/>\nof a free ride.
