I\u2019m not connected by blood or memory<br \/>\nto that story-drenched culture but it does populate me at the idea<br \/>\nlevel, like spray at the top of a fizzy drink.  Over more<br \/>\nthan a century, some of the world\u2019s loneliest and most gifted<br \/>\npeople made it comprehensible enough to us that I think<br \/>\nI understand what the countdown period in the cycle is for.<br \/>\nThe graphical unit of sense was a square that first contained<br \/>\na single eye-word.  I\u2019m getting it wrong but cultural pressure<br \/>\nover time forced several logograms into the same quadrilateral.<br \/>\nIntegrating them was an art passed down person to person<br \/>\nwithin a scribe caste that exists today, switched to Latin<br \/>\nby those friars who didn\u2019t kill them for their love of pictures.<br \/>\nA 16<sup>th<\/sup> century handscript long absent from scriptoriums<br \/>\nof Seville is still fluently used by indigenous people who can<br \/>\nneither read nor write except in the stolen tongue of Christ.<br \/>\nThey already know the world didn\u2019t end as it was meant to.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4>Monarch<\/h4>\n<p>I help a judge empty his office and am rewarded<br \/>\nwith a cap on which an eagle clutching arrows<br \/>\nspreads the golden wings of Washington\u2019s authority.<br \/>\nI bear no federal power but on summer rides<br \/>\nacquire a taste for doubletakes, flinches and nods<br \/>\nthat come without any pretense on my part,<br \/>\nI tell myself, mounting up for spins through<br \/>\na noticing citizenry.  A September festival<br \/>\ncelebrates the butterfly that through my northern<br \/>\ncity also dawdles, lolls and zooms.  Science<br \/>\ndisplays, puppet shows, wide drums, and dancers<br \/>\nin feathery, pre-Colombian regalia<br \/>\nintermarry cultures that an insect connects.<br \/>\nI make a Sunday of it, belly up to a food<br \/>\nstand selling Mexi-Corn\u2014roasted sweet<br \/>\ncorn drenched in butter and cream then<br \/>\nsprinkled with crumbly cheese.  It\u2019s delicious<br \/>\nmy wife will agree, after making room<br \/>\nfor me on a wooden bench facing<br \/>\nspirited interpretations of Toltec and Maya.<br \/>\nThe brown-skinned proprietor turns<br \/>\nand gives the nod to a man behind him<br \/>\nwho\u2019s missing some teeth, who reaches<br \/>\ninto a roaster that has simplified his hand<br \/>\nwhile aging it.  Two younger fellows<br \/>\nchopping onions and peppers at a counter<br \/>\nhave slowed, wary, watchful.  When<br \/>\nfrom the main stage a horn sounds<br \/>\nfour times\u2014long, clear and sweet\u2014<br \/>\nthe ache of migration is in the sound<br \/>\nbut it\u2019s not plaintive, not in any way.<br \/>\nWhile filling a paper boat with melted<br \/>\nfat for my ear the man stops and asks<br \/>\nif I know why they do that.  I answer<br \/>\nwithout thinking  much.  In inflected<br \/>\nEnglish he says no, it\u2019s the directions,<br \/>\nif you don\u2019t forget them you can get<br \/>\nback again.  And he glances skyward<br \/>\nas his ancestors might have while<br \/>\nmine were inventing pollution.  I say<br \/>\nyes, it\u2019s very beautiful, I\u2019ve taken<br \/>\nlots of  pictures.
