{"id":5216,"date":"2016-01-11T18:30:03","date_gmt":"2016-01-11T17:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=5216"},"modified":"2019-09-11T19:18:58","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T18:18:58","slug":"three-poems-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=5216","title":{"rendered":"Three Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rose<\/p>\n<p>Here is the rose<br \/>\nI cut from the rosebush yesterday,<br \/>\nplaced upon the ornamental box,<br \/>\na study in life after death.<\/p>\n<p>It is morning and you and I<br \/>\nhave just woken.<br \/>\nThere is birdsong.<br \/>\nAre we becoming light?<\/p>\n<p>Our bed is a small<br \/>\nChurch of England grave,<br \/>\na country place,<br \/>\nwhere the dew settles upon the grass.<\/p>\n<p>We rarely talk, but when we do,<br \/>\nwe mean it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Fennel<\/p>\n<p>I rub fennel between my fingers<br \/>\nand some is taken up in the breeze.<br \/>\nI take it up to my mouth<\/p>\n<p>and chew. It is like aniseed, a universe.<br \/>\nAnd so the Benedictine draws<br \/>\nfor his botanica<\/p>\n<p>and here is my tongue;<br \/>\nI suggest taste is a dialogue<br \/>\nbetween man and God &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>I still suggest it.<br \/>\nHow the taste has not changed<br \/>\nin a thousand years.<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps it has a little,<br \/>\nmoment by moment, here, or heaven,<br \/>\nfor it too is written.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>My Grandmother&#8217;s Alzheimers<\/p>\n<p>My Grandmother\u2019s Alzheimer\u2019s;<br \/>\nI sometimes think she is halfway to heaven:<br \/>\nshe stands up and says she must prepare<\/p>\n<p>for teaching the children;<br \/>\nof course she must.<br \/>\nThey all wear halos.<\/p>\n<p>Her daughter lives in a nice house<br \/>\ndown south; of course she does,<br \/>\nshe died last year<\/p>\n<p>and is with my grandmother\u2019s brother<br \/>\nwho she must call, she says<br \/>\nreaching for the telephone.<\/p>\n<p>And she knows I am still at school,<br \/>\nand she knows I must call my mother;<br \/>\nI see her hand pure white beneath the water<\/p>\n<p>as she picks up a newt,<br \/>\nor her baby sister out of the water,<br \/>\ncrying for mammy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rose Here is the rose I cut from the rosebush yesterday, placed upon the ornamental box, a study in life after death.
