{"id":4808,"date":"2015-06-14T22:24:25","date_gmt":"2015-06-14T21:24:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=4808"},"modified":"2015-06-15T11:48:45","modified_gmt":"2015-06-15T10:48:45","slug":"two-poems-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=4808","title":{"rendered":"Two Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Some Whales<\/b><\/p>\n<p>He is still wearing shorts and flip-flops\u00a0in the office<br \/>\nalthough summer ended\u00a0for good<br \/>\nthree years ago now<br \/>\nbecause it also wanted him to stop.<br \/>\nHe eats his soup like his bowl is a teat.<br \/>\nHe drives a small Japanese car with a high seating position.<br \/>\nHe has an ergonomic mouse<br \/>\nand an ergonomic keyboard<br \/>\nto allow his body to type tilted at the angle<br \/>\nthe human form was designed to type at.<br \/>\nHis feet make a slapping sound as he walks about the office<br \/>\nlike the sea licking a pier, but what<br \/>\nwould a sea need to print<br \/>\nanyway? More shells?<br \/>\nSeagrass, for the small fish<br \/>\nto play football in their bare feet?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n<b>The night Margaret Thatcher died\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I dreamt about Tony Blair again.<br \/>\nWe were sitting on the steps\u00a0of a mausoleum<br \/>\neating lunch in the sunshine.<br \/>\nI shifted across\u00a0to sit next to him. He said Hallo.<br \/>\nI said Hello, and tried to explain to him why he\u2019d been<br \/>\nsuch an incredible failure.\u00a0Didn\u2019t he realise?<br \/>\nHe said he\u2019d always tried to do what he thought was right,<br \/>\nand that we shouldn\u2019t be afraid to take sides.<br \/>\nHe had pickle from his cheese and pickle sandwich<br \/>\nin the corners of his mouth, not entire cubes,<br \/>\nbut quite a bit of the syrup.\u00a0I sighed.<br \/>\nI said OK, we all get funny ideas<br \/>\nbut that\u2019s what other people are for,<br \/>\nto tell us when we\u2019re being ridiculous.<br \/>\nWhat about his wife?<br \/>\nHe looked down at his sandwich.<br \/>\nDidn\u2019t he have friends?<br \/>\nHe stopped chewing.<br \/>\nAn aeroplane passed slowly in the sky<br \/>\nlike it was also dreaming.<br \/>\nHe looked at his watch.\u00a0I said<br \/>\nif you\u2019ve got to be somewhere, don\u2019t mind me.<br \/>\nHe didn\u2019t seem to hear.<br \/>\nHe got out his phone<br \/>\nand started fiddling about with it.<br \/>\nThere were people taking photographs<br \/>\nof the mausoleum, and some passed us<br \/>\non the steps on their way up.<br \/>\nOthers, like us, were just sitting<br \/>\non the steps, having a conversation<br \/>\nas though nothing were wrong.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some Whales He is still wearing shorts and flip-flops\u00a0in the office although summer ended\u00a0for good three years ago now because it also wanted him to stop.
