\nsoft light for jump-the-chalk and pitch-and-toss,
\nthe giggling swirl of humbug heaven
\nthen kiss-the-girl-and-run-away. In Dunlop Place,<\/p>\n

Sam Carter was your champion lighter,
\na beaming glow-worm from dawn to dusk,
\nlighting the dark as you ran home. \u2018Light\u2019s ghost,\u2019
\nyou called him. You said the best lamplighters<\/p>\n

could light the lamps from moving bikes,
\nlifting the pennies from blind men\u2019s eyes
\nwithout stopping to offer a blessing.
\nSam liked that. Fetched light like good news,<\/p>\n

as welcome a sight as the pot brewing,
\nhis lighting pole and torch on his shoulder,
\na fixed grin in the swirling smog of gloom.<\/p>\n
