{"id":4268,"date":"2014-12-07T23:17:10","date_gmt":"2014-12-07T23:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=4268"},"modified":"2014-12-07T23:39:33","modified_gmt":"2014-12-07T23:39:33","slug":"five-poems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=4268","title":{"rendered":"Five Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>\u00a0Horae Solitariae<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>One lady, I recall, the relict perhaps<br \/>\nof an insolvent rake, would sit and mutter<br \/>\nin a temper out of keeping with her age.<br \/>\nI saw her once, and others of the damned,<\/p>\n<p>take shelter under the same tree from the rain.<br \/>\nSo anxious to impress, none said a word<br \/>\nwhile overhead the invisible voices<br \/>\nof small birds made a melancholy <em>sic transit<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><br \/>\n<em><strong>Rose Acre Papers<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>As Milton learnt to weave into his lines<br \/>\n<em>the minute drops from off the eaves<\/em><br \/>\nthe rain has said the many things<br \/>\nof which I have made copies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><br \/>\n<strong>The Icknield Way<\/strong><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>At the grocer\u2019s shop they were killing a pig<br \/>\non the other side of the wall. Neither<br \/>\nthe screaming nor the end of it disturbed<br \/>\nhis cutting up of lard and the women<br \/>\ntalking of the coronation. Tonight,<br \/>\nI think I hear bacon frying in a room nearby<br \/>\nwith a noise almost as loud as the pig<br \/>\nmade when it was stuck, but it is the rain<br \/>\npouring steadily off the inn roof.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n<em><strong>The Heart of England<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>After work I look forward<br \/>\nto songs at <em>The Chequers<\/em>, a shamefaced walk<br \/>\nwith a girl, fishing for tench and eels,<br \/>\neven cricket. But after marriage all that is past.<\/p>\n<p>The workmen are gone, faint lights appearing<br \/>\nthrough the blinds of finished houses.<br \/>\nThere is no sunset, only a veil of mist.<br \/>\nThe end of the day dies a natural death in bed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n<strong>In Pursuit of Spring<\/strong><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Rows of finches hung along the wall,<br \/>\nbattered ones a shilling and<br \/>\nthe neater ones for eighteen-pence,<\/p>\n<p>linnets pushing up against the edges<br \/>\nof their six-inch cage, sounding<br \/>\nas they had among the Downs.<\/p>\n<p>I saw a man leave clutching at<br \/>\na paper bag and not much further<br \/>\nup the road bend down to let<\/p>\n<p>one of the poor things go; outside,<br \/>\namong the trees, that finch\u2019s<br \/>\ndingy plumage made no mark.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Horae Solitariae One lady, I recall, the relict perhaps of an insolvent rake, would sit and mutter in a temper out of keeping with her age.
