Eva Bourke<\/em><\/p>\n<p>the whole night the storm raged<br \/>\naround the white clapboard house held together<br \/>\nby no more than the thin lamplight<br \/>\nof its rooms. the autumnal crowns<br \/>\nof the trees next morning<br \/>\nlike shattered church windows.<\/p>\n<p>the abandoned amusement park<br \/>\nwith the maritime snakes of its rollercoasters:<br \/>\nin good summers they feed on<br \/>\nall the candied screams,<br \/>\nnow they stand, rigid with winter.<\/p>\n<p>nightly, friends, the dusk<br \/>\ncuts out the silhouettes<br \/>\nof deer from the woods.<br \/>\nthe long strolls on the strand:<br \/>\ndifficult to say in this lonely light<br \/>\nwhether it is a black bear climbing ashore<br \/>\nor a fragment of driftwood<br \/>\nburnt to a black bear.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n<strong><i><b><i>ohio<\/i><\/b><br \/>\n<\/i><\/strong><i><i>Transl. Eva Bourke<\/i><\/i><i><br \/>\n<\/i><strong><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/strong>whoever walks here looks suspicious.<\/p>\n<p>the clapboard houses in blue and gray,<br \/>\nwarmed by the sun.<br \/>\nthe cricket engine purring more slowly,<\/p>\n<p>and a sky promoting nothing but itself.<br \/>\nthe first dry leaves float down<br \/>\nas if a library were on fire somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>weeks still, days at least,<br \/>\nuntil winter pushes its blizzards against<br \/>\nthe flimsy window panes.<\/p>\n<p>towards the north lie the great lakes,<br \/>\nand the wind sweeps through all the way to chile.<\/p>\n<p><strong><i><\/p>\n<p><\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>of lake michigan Transl.
