{"id":3234,"date":"2013-11-29T21:01:49","date_gmt":"2013-11-29T21:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=3234"},"modified":"2013-12-15T21:09:04","modified_gmt":"2013-12-15T21:09:04","slug":"rory-waterman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=3234","title":{"rendered":"Three Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Granattrichter mit Blumen\u00a0(1924)<\/i><\/b><i><\/i><br \/>\n<i>after an etching by Otto Dix<\/i><i><\/i><br \/>\n<i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Because he couldn\u2019t forget it eight years later<br \/>\nwe stand ten yards from that crater,<br \/>\nprevented from gazing into the heart:<br \/>\nhe blacked that in, held us back from it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nAnd he recalled the background bare, but etched a chain<br \/>\nof full-grown wildflowers patting hands at the rim.<br \/>\nWe know they\u2019ve filled it all in, that ninety ploughs<br \/>\nhave dragged their fingers against his remembered grit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Sots Hole<\/i><\/b><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nHe forgets the Fenland hamlet where willows slumped at the dyke<br \/>\nand lapped from both ends, where a ten-year-old lad on a bike<br \/>\ncould get in an hour, without the grown-ups knowing,<br \/>\nand drink from a bike-bottle on the bank, the unfettered wind blowing<br \/>\nthe fronds in loops, and the parched fields spread like bread,<br \/>\nas flat as the sky, with the moorhens coming and going\u2026<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nTwenty years later, to the day perhaps,<br \/>\nhe leads her to that bank, down that metalled cycle track<br \/>\nand takes her on a bench-rail, hid in a hide.<br \/>\nThe latch opens onto a world that couldn\u2019t worsen,<br \/>\nwhere willows comb the water and unseen mallards meander.<br \/>\nAnd she pulls him close \u2013 all he once knew he wanted.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><b><i>The Heritage Centre<\/i><\/b><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&#8216;OPEN&#8217; means almost empty, she finds. The heating gurgles;<br \/>\ntraffic slogs past, its groans now dulled by the windows and blinds.<br \/>\nShe steps to the faceless mannequins, tight in their dull-bright taffeta,<br \/>\nthen over to an oak-rimmed table cabinet, where she finds<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\na tersely-labelled miscellany of snuff boxes, gemstones, watches \u2013<br \/>\nand among it the dull wedding band her great-great-grandmother wore,<br \/>\nthough how could she know? She taps the glass.
