{"id":3059,"date":"2013-06-27T09:40:27","date_gmt":"2013-06-27T09:40:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=3059"},"modified":"2016-01-22T19:15:43","modified_gmt":"2016-01-22T18:15:43","slug":"3-micropoems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=3059","title":{"rendered":"CNW \/SALC micropoem competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\" http:\/\/www.alc.manchester.ac.uk\/aboutus\/news\/micro-poetry-competition\/\">CNW \/ SALC micropoem competition<\/a> drew <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search\/realtime?q=%23micropoem13&#038;src=hash\">94 entries<\/a>: the judges met yesterday with the unenviable task of picking just 3 poems for prizes and here is their verdict:<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We thought <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AndrewPoetry\">Andrew McMillan<\/a>&#8216;s &#8216;train, backwards&#8217;, the winning micropoem, made every syllable count and created an amazingly rich visual world in such a small space. Its fluent rhythm and mixture of ordinary and extraordinary details were very impressive.<\/p>\n<p>We liked many of the other micropems too: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EssBarraclough\">Simon Barraclough<\/a>&#8216;s &#8216;Zed&#8217; was witty and precise and span intriguing variations from its title while <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sodelafo\">David Milligan-Croft<\/a>&#8216;s &#8216;The stone&#8217; used a single strong image very effectively.<\/p>\n<p>While we enjoyed reading <em>all <\/em>of the entries, we found it hard to leave out the good images of Valerie Sirr&#8217;s &#8216;Wild Geese&#8217;, Angie Holden&#8217;s &#8216;Meet me&#8230;&#8217; , David Borrott&#8217;s &#8216;Pair&#8217;  and Martin Kratz&#8217;s &#8216;Morning&#8217;, the narratives of  Fielding Ronshaugen&#8217;s &#8216;They say a bird in the house&#8217; and Peter Viggers&#8217; &#8216;Leaving&#8217;, and the lovely sonic patterns of Rebecca Perry&#8217;s &#8216;A Rhopalic&#8217;, Tony Vowles&#8217; &#8216;Remotely&#8217; and Alison Lock&#8217;s &#8216;Himalayan Balsam&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to everyone for taking part, and we hope you&#8217;ll enjoy reading the Manchester Review and can join us at CNW events at the Martin Harris Centre next academic year.<\/p>\n<p>Janet, John and Simon&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1st<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>train, backwards through town\/river\/the long, unbroken thought of it\/red kite \/ chest burning\/phoenix rising from the ash trees <\/p>\n<p><em>Andrew McMillan<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>2nd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ZED<br \/>\nKnee-bent bookend,<br \/>\ndoor stop, blood clot,<br \/>\nblind spot, dead drop,<br \/>\nhalting the alphabet<br \/>\nin its tracks.<\/p>\n<p><em>Simon Barraclough<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>3rd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The stone<br \/>\nMeets its reflection<br \/>\nAs it skims across the lake.<\/p>\n<p><em>David Milligan-Croft<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The CNW \/ SALC micropoem competition drew 94 entries: the judges met yesterday with the unenviable task of picking just 3 poems for prizes and here is their verdict: &#8216;We thought Andrew McMillan&#8216;s &#8216;train, backwards&#8217;, the winning micropoem, made every syllable count and created an amazingly rich visual world in such a small space.
