\n<\/a>The Big House<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amateur musicians join me unexpectedly so
\na kind of music I know nothing about \u2013
\nbaroque or symphonic, or chamber \u2013 plays,
\nin slow notes, flat with the smell of instant coffee,
\nand dry toast, and unmarked hardback books, across this<\/p>\n

hangover of mine, couched in its now-useless hideout, which
\noverlooks the grand house\u2019s grounds, across which flit
\nunknown birds, thrushes maybe \u2013 blue-tits, swallows \u2013
\nlike a display of emotion I shouldn\u2019t think
\nI could put a name to it\u2019s so joyful.
\n 
\n<\/p>\n

Pressing<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018\u2026the word \u2018starvation\u2019, which to Latinists is a Barbarism\u2026\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

The Latinists huddle around
\nthe candle-like indecision of a tiny flickering
\nblack-and-white of television, the cutting-edge
\nof that which they will allow themselves
\nto be aware. They are amazed. It pictures
\na monstrous data, a graphic<\/p>\n

of the ruined Greek economy, which is tortured
\nto the point of importing olive oil. The Latinists
\nare appalled, their Doric minds importing
\na dawning \u00a0horror like cheap, Germanic olive oil.
\nThe T.V.\u2019s tinny speakers bespeak the sound of their
\ncarefully tended teleologies crashing down<\/p>\n

into crude, barbarian eschatologies. The Latinists
\nare muted by the cutting edge of the new possibilities.<\/p>\n
