The room is empty apart from the plants,
\nthe people and all of the furniture.
\nSilence falls or is fed through speakers
\nand the vacuum of the hush
\ndraws sound from our voices,
\na chance gust through an exposed harmonica.<\/p>\n
We make the sound of pigeons patrolling gutters
\njust outside windows, the pigeons in the gutters outside
\ncopy as best they can
\nand from the window,
\ncaught in the net curtains
\nis a commotion between a parking attendant
\nand a man unused to paying
\nfor his mistakes.<\/p>\n
Over the road, under a streetlamp
\nanomalously blazing already
\na young man in a trenchcoat and a woman
\nin a headscarf paw at one another\u2019s clothing.<\/p>\n
People begin to leave. You assume
\ngarb, adjust the collar, head for the exit.
\nOutside everybody seems to be talking about the weather.
\nYou ignore them, you\u2019ve decided you\u2019re in a hurry.
\nA man in a bigger hurry still, talking loudly,
\nlooking straight ahead
\npushes past.<\/p>\n
The tube station\u2019s a plughole at this time of day,
\nwhisking people down and in and around (they cling
\nto their oars in their own extended metaphors),
\ntossing others out in a flurry of momentum and newspapers<\/p>\n
into the grid of the city
\nand the grind of its engine,
\nanother lateral strut
\nfor what some of us still call capitalism.<\/p>\n
