CONSIDERATION<\/strong><\/p>\n

The kumquat tree you brought for me
\nfrom Florida, it likes the sun, you said,
\nso I found a place outside
\nwhere the sun hit hard
\nand marveled to see the kumquats grow.<\/p>\n

My first fruit tree! They tasted great\u2014
\nsour shock, but surprising
\nsweetness in the rind\u2014
\nand every one I ate
\nwas like something found
\nthat I thought I\u2019d never find.<\/p>\n

Then winter came and I brought the tree inside,
\nbut it didn\u2019t do well, it had no smell.
\nI kept moving
\nlooking for the spot. But then
\nI would forget:
\nit withered with neglect.<\/p>\n

Leaves turned, dried out. Without
\nsun, the fruit refused.
\nUntil I understood
\nand did what I could
\nto tend to it, with little aptitude<\/p>\n

that grew from a fear of losing it
\nfor something I never said.
\nNever said, but should have.<\/p>\n

(To you, I mean). It almost died.<\/p>\n

And if it had . . .<\/p>\n

But spring came
\nand I placed it back outside
\nwhere even in the city, in this small garden,
\nmarginalized by brick, the air is fresh,
\na little raw, perhaps, as one might expect,
\nbut where the sun returns,<\/p>\n

I hope, this offering,
\nwith fruit, friend, from within its potted field.<\/p>\n

\nTHE MESSAGE<\/strong><\/p>\n

He\u2019s up there in his room,
\nA marble under the bed,
\nThe swirl of green in the world of glass
\nIntermingles with the red.<\/p>\n

He knows I\u2019m coming, yes, but
\nDoes he know I\u2019m him?
\nThat the marble\u2019s in my pocket now,
\nThe investment of a charm?<\/p>\n

I\u2019m opening the door.
\nNow he\u2019s looking up, expectantly.
\nBut what I\u2019m not yet ready for
\nHe\u2019s telling me.<\/p>\n
