Did we ever<br \/>recognise a certain lack of solidity<br \/>as we hammocked across the gap<br \/>between her and me?<\/p>\n<p>Rockbreakers became<br \/>a favourite subject of Victorian art,<br \/>as focused on their task as children<br \/>at seaside slot-machines oblivious<br \/>to the beauty of the landscape around them.<br \/>Their feet will never travel the roads they make;<br \/>the stone being broken is the spirit of the man.<\/p>\n<p>Saxifrage, stone-breaker, rivelling<br \/>away at the structure of our lives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Belfagor in Mumbles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The weever fish ignores me<br \/>at a thousand decibels,<br \/>and the compass jellyfish;<br \/>the disgruntled of the world. Glass<br \/>splintering in their feet, bathers<br \/>abandon rockpools, their mouths<br \/>tight with salt.<\/p>\n<p>I cannot remember my mission:<br \/>I wrote it behind receipts.<br \/>I already broke all my resolutions<br \/>for my new life. It takes<\/p>\n<p>only a year to make my first<br \/>friend. He watches over his burger<br \/>as I heap gherkins with rock salt<br \/>and eat this:<br \/>a faux pas he cannot forgive.<\/p>\n<p>He goes home to his work-life balance.<br \/>I could sicken him<br \/>with one clawed touch. I don\u2019t.<br \/>I trudge calf-forwards<br \/>down the frilled coastline; water pinches<br \/>its clinking manacles at my legs.<br \/>I could drop down at any moment,<\/p>\n<p>to my old shrug and ladle world<br \/>with its intricate parliaments, its rules<br \/>I cut into my chest. I do not, kicking up<br \/>the earth\u2019s sifting skin, balancing<br \/>on eons of juiced lizards, relishing<br \/>the very name <em>crust<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I could spend my life stamping<br \/>on any part of planet earth<br \/>and feeling that beneath it is not hollow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Harrow<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I grew nauseous to my bones when,<br \/>to make a point\u2014<br \/>about blasphemy I believe\u2014<br \/>the older generation wired me to a rotary harrow<br \/>in a red robe,<br \/>with a monkey dressed as a bishop<br \/>and set us both for a spin.<\/p>\n<p>Once a whole field had been reduced to tilth<br \/>and my hands freed, I slobbered over ginger, wanted<br \/>to cradle the monkey. He escaped to the forest,<br \/>a drip about to drop; I spooned up mustard<br \/>between my lips until my ears<br \/>blew.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s nowhere to rest in the kitchen.<br \/>As the sun roasts the treetops<br \/>I wind slices of cucumber \u2013<br \/>some just brocades of seed \u2013<br \/>around my finger.<\/p>\n<p>Only the small hands of that particular monkey<br \/>could pat and rub away the old pains<br \/>in my heart<br \/>without breaking my ribs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Laura Seymour&#8217;s<\/strong> poetry has been published as a collection, The Shark Cage (Cinnamon Press 2015) which won the 2013 Cinnamon Press debut poetry collection prize.
