{"id":13108,"date":"2025-12-19T11:44:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-19T10:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=13108"},"modified":"2025-12-20T12:56:26","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T11:56:26","slug":"windwatt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=13108","title":{"rendered":"Windwatt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Image-9.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"750\" \/><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Image: \u00a9 Courtesy of Manchester City Galleries<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Windwatt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tide wrack winds<br \/>through clotted estuary mud,<br \/>mud so thick it stops the breath,<br \/>but gives life <br \/>to riverine shell-creatures,<br \/>and makes mudflats <br \/>blossom with detritus, <br \/>estuarine silt flowers;<br \/>clay-born and half-formed things.<\/p>\n<p>Taf-torn, river wrought,<br \/>the Landsker Line* splits<br \/>more than language; even <br \/>this island town, <br \/>from which castles<br \/>slide into swamps, levees<br \/>dissolve into salt, and <br \/>cockles herald <br \/>the last stand of the shore.<\/p>\n<p>Is this glacial-silt, unfrozen in <br \/>time and space? <br \/>Or just the mundane<br \/>passage of a landfill life, <br \/>made less than solid <br \/>by the passing of the tides.<br \/>Either way, the barren <br \/>zone that spreads from<br \/>within that long grass makes<br \/>quick work of our swamp-flats, <br \/>where shorebirds have only <br \/>bay mud and skimming stones<br \/>to gorge on.<\/p>\n<p>Let us too slide into the silt, find<br \/>a dune from <br \/>which to watch<br \/>the collapse of the beach barrier, <br \/>and the spread of the wrack, <br \/>as the high-water mark moves <br \/>over and above our heads, <br \/>until we are nothing but<br \/>herringbone shapes,<br \/>waiting for <br \/>a longshore current<br \/>to wash us away.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>*Language border that divides West Wales into Welsh-speaking and English-speaking areas.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Thomas Storey<\/strong> is an editor and writer who lives in Copenhagen.
