Stern, here.<br \/>As the sea lathers, the inlet silts,<br \/>its islet less isle, its saline isolation<br \/>stolen as the straits start to thin.<\/p>\n<p>See those tell-tales? Let\u2019s loosen the sheet,<br \/>reel it in, stash the sail, lash the tiller,<br \/>ease her onto the stones, the shells, tie on.<br \/>I taste rain on the air, hints that it\u2019s near,<br \/>then stare at the hills, the harsh terrain<br \/>so soon torn \u2013 let\u2019s retreat.<\/p>\n<p>There on the heath, a tree, shelter. See?<br \/>Hares hasten to holes in the soil at its roots,<br \/>nose into these near-interior lairs, nestle.<br \/>The earth\u2019s strata is sheer here: ashen shale,<br \/>teal-tint slate at a slant. I sit on a heather throne,<br \/>as I listen to the hail, thrill at the stars, rest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Sometimes It Snows In May<br \/><\/strong><\/span><em>for Amanda, and Andrew<\/em><\/p>\n<p>An angel of sorts pipes up<br \/>as we blink from dark high church<br \/>to bright high sun, blame<br \/>our tears on sudden blindness.<\/p>\n<p>Blackbird in the cherry out front,<br \/>opposite the Ring O\u2019Bells, where we<br \/>heard time called more than once.<br \/>Time has been called once more.<\/p>\n<p>After the wake, we went downhill.<br \/>We found the footprint of our school<br \/>and didn\u2019t know what to do with it.<br \/>We climbed ghost steps to a ghost entrance,<\/p>\n<p>kicked crumbling concrete, stamped<br \/>the scuffed outline of a locker block,<br \/>remembered queuing for class<br \/>together, us three, except now<\/p>\n<p>it\u2019s us two, home to see off our friend,<br \/>who stayed. Who\u2019d have thought this,<br \/>back then, stood in the stairwell, uniformed,<br \/>bitching about Tiffany\u2019s jumper dress?<\/p>\n<p>All gone: the dress, the uniforms, the stairs,<br \/>the lockers, the entrance, the school,<br \/>you. Just us two kicking concrete, drunk<br \/>under blue skies, off to get drunker.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Lunar Mare<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Out at sea, the moon casts shadows.<br \/>We watch as we get ahead of ourselves,<br \/>hunched shoulders and unfurled sails<br \/>silhouetted on the surface we soon break.<\/p>\n<p>Our tell-tales twitch and the tiller pulls<br \/>at the tide change, sudden, wind change, wild<br \/>white horses flick spindrift manes our way,<br \/>make off into the night as we bolt on blind.<\/p>\n<p>Our light, our moon, moved in that moment \u2013<br \/>in that blink of an eye. Not a second to spare now:<br \/>let loose the sheet, reel in, lash down, look up,<br \/>switch sides, stash your winch, and breathe.<\/p>\n<p>Out at sea, the moon casts shadows.<br \/>We watch as they slip by on the water.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>____<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Sarah-Clare Conlon<\/strong> has been writer-in-residence at Ilkley Literature Festival, Saul Hay Gallery and Victoria Baths in Manchester, where she lives and works as a magazine editor.
