{"id":12920,"date":"2025-07-04T13:33:01","date_gmt":"2025-07-04T12:33:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=12920"},"modified":"2025-12-20T13:15:31","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T12:15:31","slug":"3-poems-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=12920","title":{"rendered":"3 poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/large_GMIII_MCAG_2007_72.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"489\" \/><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Image: \u00a9 Courtesy of Manchester City Galleries<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Telephonophobia<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I sprint three stairs<br \/>at a time, dying to hear<br \/>who\u2019s on the line.<br \/>I lift the receiver to my trained<br \/>ear, my lips purse tiny airholes.<br \/>He said he was a doctor<br \/>about to visit our school<br \/>needed to conduct the first<br \/>examination. <em>Are you alone?<br \/><\/em><em>I\u2019m alone<\/em>, I say, thinking of the lollipops dazzling<br \/>at my local GP, me perched on my mother\u2019s knee,<br \/>sucking up the glorious attention.<br \/>He doesn\u2019t ask me about my asthma, my eye infections,<br \/>wants to know my name, my age, my measurements.<br \/>I tell him I\u2019m the tallest in my class, run the fastest.<br \/>But then he asks, <em>how big are your breasts?<br \/><\/em><em>Do you wear a bra yet?<\/em> I stare down at the horses galloping across<br \/>the chest of my favourite pyjamas, their manes buffeting my heartbeat.<br \/><em>Do you have hair yet, between your legs? What does it look like?<br \/><\/em>I wear mucky jeans running through the fields<br \/>to my calf in the shed, her sandpaper tongue<br \/>slurping on my small hands.<br \/><em>Do you ever touch yourself? Go to the bathroom, I\u2019ll wait.<br \/><\/em>I was there for the birth, her mother\u2019s eyes stunned,<br \/>her body curdled. Shock of hooves squeezed through<br \/>vulva folds. Head pierced the sac before the body emerged<br \/>flopped to the ground. And mother, licked her alive.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>I Lose My Mother <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>in the card shop<br \/>of Wilton Shopping Centre.<br \/>Ask her not to budge<br \/>while I run to the post office.<br \/>She never forgot<br \/>birthdays, anniversaries,<br \/>these days we help her<br \/>remember another present:<br \/>2 Minecraft t-shirts,<br \/>1 Baby Yoda key ring,<br \/>3 packs of Pok\u00e9mon cards.<br \/>I said 5 minutes but take 9<br \/>because my mother has a sweet<br \/>tooth and loves lemon meringue pies<br \/>and their egg-white swirls look extra\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<br \/>puffy at the cake shop.<br \/>Slices of my heart climb<br \/>into my ears, popping like sparklers.<br \/>I scan the card rows:<br \/>GET WELL SOON<br \/>WITH SYMPATHY<br \/>SORRY YOU\u2019RE LEAVING.<br \/>She is gone.<br \/>I go back to letting go<br \/>of her hand when I was 6, she was busy<br \/>chattering to the man in the butcher shop<br \/>(now a GameStop),<br \/>when my eyes fell in love<br \/>with the red guitar<br \/>in the window of the toy shop<br \/>(now an E-Cig shop),<br \/>gold lightning bolts bursting across its frame.<br \/>Her face when she found me \u2014<br \/>eyes wet-cross and cry-laughing, kneeling<br \/>and squeezing, <em>don\u2019t ever run off on me!<br \/><\/em>I race to the exit, stopping at each shop<br \/>on my left, on my right. 11 shops and 2 caf\u00e9s<br \/>there she is leaning on her walker, reaching out<br \/>to touch the fabric of a lacy summer dress.<br \/>I stand at the shop door, watch her<br \/>cup the hem, examine the slip,<br \/>roll her thumb over the pearl-like buttons.<br \/>Unhooking the dress from the hanger she turns<br \/>flashes her high cheekbones,<br \/><em>Ah, there you are, I\u2019ve found you<br \/><\/em><em>the perfect present.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Lisp<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The nuns summoned an elocutionist<br \/>to assess my mother\u2019s vocal affliction.<br \/>No malocclusion, overbite or improper<br \/>jaw. He asked if she was a thumb sucker,<br \/>examined her ears for glue, dictated tricksy<br \/>twisters like <em>Mississippi<\/em>, <em>assassin, statistician<\/em>.<br \/>For months, she spit-fired sounds into a mirror,<br \/>did what she was told: \u2018If you can\u2019t say it well,<br \/>say nothing.\u2019 The specialist concluded<br \/>she had an unpredictable tongue \u2014<br \/>a systematic thrust toward her front teeth.<\/p>\n<p>Now, she\u2019s too tired to speak, her senses scolded<br \/>by cerebral insults. Sometimes she stares straight<br \/>through me like she\u2019s looking for somebody else.<br \/>At night I lie beside her, wait for her to wake.<br \/>Kneel on the crash mats, pray for her<br \/>to say<em> sixty-six<\/em> over and over.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>____<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>R\u00f3is\u00edn Leggett Bohan<\/strong>, a Cork writer, was the <strong>Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award Runner-Up<\/strong> and an <strong>Aesthetica Creative Writing Award finalist in 2024<\/strong>. She has several poems in Beginnings Over and Over: Four New Poets from Ireland (Dedalus Press, 2025). Her poem <strong>\u2018We Carried May\u2019 was nationally showcased by Poetry Ireland for Poetry Day 2025<\/strong>, and forthcoming work will be broadcast on RT\u00c9 Radio 1 in the summer of 2025.
