It will grow and die and synthesise<br \/>So why, sir, is it stained? Men enslaved; families separated,<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Killed.<br \/>Yet the brew drips, drips, drips,<br \/>Pooling at the bottom of the mug.<br \/>Who said gold doesn\u2019t grow on trees?<\/p>\n<p>As it sprouted, the brown beans, the leaves<br \/>Weren\u2019t the only green growing,<br \/>Inflating,<br \/>Monopolising<br \/>She is on every block, in every corner shop, copied and pasted,<br \/><strong>Introducing the Skinny White Mocha Frapp\u2122<br \/><\/strong>(With a shot of originality.)<\/p>\n<p>Now, our fingers interlocked through woollen gloves, we wander<br \/>Through museum halls, \u2018Just two lattes, please.\u2019 Keep it easy,<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Classic.<br \/>Warmth in either hand, we discover dim-lit burrows in a busy city<strong>.<br \/><\/strong>The price, the visit, the coffee and the company, all, at last, good.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Pencil<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I trace the curves of her skin as she sits on marble museum stairs<br \/>swirling the lead in rings for her chestnut curls, as the coils fall upon her shoulder.<br \/>Her beauty captured on parchment in tones of granite grey, she doesn\u2019t care<br \/>that the charcoal smudges on my hands stain her cream cardigan as I hold her.<\/p>\n<p>I draft poems in notebooks she has bought me for every Christmas and birthday,<br \/>accompanied with small illustrations of towns we visited, and cocktails shared.<br \/>Writing poems in a caf\u00e9 in small countryside villages, I know, a wannabe Wilde,<br \/>but for the way she makes me feel I could never have been prepared.<\/p>\n<p>I sketch blueprints for kitchen tables and shelves she wants for our future house,<br \/>as soon as the deposit is paid, I\u2019ll take a measuring tape and pencil to every wall.<br \/>Outlining our future together, soon I\u2019ll draw her as my spouse, and-<br \/>when I\u2019ve figured out the dimensions, these floors will be where our child learns to crawl.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Sugar<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Coca Cola sweet on my tongue,<br \/>burning my sinuses as it circulates,<br \/>fizzing against my teeth so young,<br \/>with little bumps running along the top.<\/p>\n<p>A sandwich bag half full of white snow,<br \/>pinned to the display board to teach<br \/>children what they ought to know.<br \/>but sugar isn\u2019t the worst powder in clear bags.<\/p>\n<p>If only they had that in their video tapes,<br \/>I could use my bank card, house keys and \u00a310 notes<br \/>without my heat racing at simple shapes<br \/>with a sharp edge atop a mirror under a table lamp.<\/p>\n<p>Nosebleeds beg a pocket full of Kleenex,<br \/>and a lot of lying about this \u2018cold you can\u2019t shake.\u2019<br \/>I might not remember the crack den sex,<br \/>But I can eyeball five grams on instinct.<\/p>\n<p>Sleeping for too long then not at all,<br \/>I\u2019ve heard of hyper kids at trampoline parks,<br \/>the blue smartie effect at junior football,<br \/>but e-numbers and slush puppies don\u2019t rival my sugar rush.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>____<\/p>\n<p><em>After studying Literature and Creative Writing at Lancaster University, tutored by Paul Farley and Eoghan Walls, Ami started her Masters at Manchester Metropolitan University.
