{"id":12256,"date":"2022-09-06T12:53:26","date_gmt":"2022-09-06T11:53:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=12256"},"modified":"2024-11-26T20:27:09","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T19:27:09","slug":"12256","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=12256","title":{"rendered":"2 Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>\nRetablo for impossible waters<\/h2>\n<p>Every river a keening.<\/p>\n<p>The Seine: I was flayed on my back, dress<br \/>\nshrouding, shoes drifting away, I was inventing<br \/>\nmy own madness and drowning<br \/>\nhappily in it.<\/p>\n<p>The Rhine: I posed on a rock, singing men<br \/>\nto their deaths, that must<br \/>\nhave been me, the woman left and lost and singing,<br \/>\nisn\u2019t that the clich\u00e9, victim swung aggressor?<\/p>\n<p>\nUnnamed river: taunting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Every river a repository for the impossible<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;or what I feared was failure, all my seasons overflowing<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;with need.<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Every river a conversation in a cryptic language,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I waved my forked stick, seeking<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;hidden branches, lost tributaries, the tense fable<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;of skin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>\nretablo for an unwelcome advance<\/h2>\n<p><text-align=\"justify\">my legs are\u00a0 paper\u00a0 \u00a0 my hair\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0has flown<br \/>\nfrom\u00a0&nbsp; \u00a0 my  head\u00a0&nbsp; &nbsp;\u00a0 \u00a0I\u2019m&nbsp; a &nbsp;frog&nbsp;  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;   thrust<br \/>\ninto\u00a0 &nbsp; \u00a0boiling\u00a0 \u00a0water\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 a &nbsp;&nbsp;flamingo-pink\u00a0 <br \/>\nmotel\u00a0 \u00a0 bursting  &nbsp; into\u00a0 \u00a0 the&nbsp; room\u00a0 &nbsp;&nbsp;\u00a0 my<br \/>\narmy helmet&nbsp; is &nbsp; a  salad bowl\u00a0 \u00a0 &nbsp;\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 I am\u00a0<br \/>\nthe&nbsp;&nbsp; mis-timed\u00a0 \u00a0 laugh-track\u00a0 \u00a0 the&nbsp;&nbsp;  raft<br \/>\nstuck\u00a0 to\u00a0 the rug\u00a0 \u00a0trapped\u00a0 in\u00a0&nbsp; an ocean<br \/>\nof\u00a0 \u00a0 keys\u00a0 &nbsp;\u00a0forged\u00a0&nbsp;&nbsp; \u00a0iron&nbsp; &amp; &nbsp;slick\u00a0&nbsp; &nbsp;\u00a0steel\u00a0 <br \/>\ndangling &nbsp;from &nbsp;&nbsp;kite strings\u00a0&nbsp; \u00a0red &nbsp;thread\u00a0<br \/>\nbleeding web &nbsp;&nbsp;keys\u00a0 \u00a0to\u00a0 \u00a0 the\u00a0 \u00a0 no-escape<br \/>\nkeys taunting &nbsp;&amp;\u00a0 I&#8217;m\u00a0&nbsp; spinning\u00a0 &nbsp;\u00a0on&nbsp;\u00a0 the<br \/>\nrug\u00a0 &nbsp;\u00a0 \u00a0a raft\u00a0 &nbsp;\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0stuck\u00a0 \u00a0taking&nbsp; root&nbsp; in a<br \/>\nstorm &nbsp;lightning &nbsp; surging &nbsp;&amp; I&#8217;m flying&nbsp; a<br \/>\nkite\u00a0 \u00a0&amp; a million keys\u00a0 are&nbsp;&nbsp; catching&nbsp; fire<\/text-align><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Retablo for impossible waters Every river a keening.
