Ferlinghetti in Derry<\/strong><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

In a wooden boat, like Colm Cille,
\nFerlinghetti searched the depths<\/p>\n

for monsters that might eat his men \u2013
\nGerman U-Boats fed on Tory Island cod.<\/p>\n

So, you can rhyme the city, if you will,
\nwith Ferlinghetti \u2013 Lieutenant Commander<\/p>\n

US Navy; skipper in the Splinter Fleet
\non the open, choppy Foyle.<\/p>\n

A friend of mine who knew the poet well
\ntold me this as Gospel \u2013 though,<\/p>\n

as far as I can tell, he\u2019s wrong.
\nThe Western Isles of Scotland<\/p>\n

seems the place \u2013 watchful, spring manoeuvres
\nbetween Lewis and South Uist,<\/p>\n

between Protestant and Catholic,
\nbetween Clan Morrison and the Bonnie Prince.<\/p>\n

I heard him reading once\u00a0\u2013 the poet Lawrence,
\ndressed in dungarees and bowler hat<\/p>\n

like a half-dressed Orangeman
\nfrom Short and Harland\u2019s in 1945,<\/p>\n

and a woman fainted when he said
\nthat six weeks after the mushroom cloud<\/p>\n

he took a long, slow train to Nagasaki
\nand found almost nothing there<\/p>\n

except for a teacup, and, welded into it,
\nwas human flesh and bone.<\/p>\n

Sometimes I see a man just like him \u2013
\nor his elegant shade at least \u2013<\/p>\n

walking up a slope in North Beach;
\nthe posture of a long-retired officer,<\/p>\n

long given over to poetry and peace.
\nAnd tonight, seeing him abroad again<\/p>\n

on one of Derry\u2019s steeper streets, I ask him
\nhow he moves so well beyond the dying.<\/p>\n

And, as a by the by, was he ever here at all?
