\u00a0\u00a0nyet<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>Walking towards the Rochdale Canal<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>August hauls deep green dreaming<br \/>\ninto the woods.<br \/>\nEven the bracken is so high and thick<br \/>\nI am up to my neck.<br \/>\nI feel its lure \u2013<br \/>\nwho doesn\u2019t desire to trust<br \/>\nin what\u2019s sprung, the emerald<br \/>\ncaves, to lean in and be lost.<\/p>\n<p>Clouds. Someone calling<br \/>\ntheir dog. Just here, I could be<br \/>\nin the clefts of Magoebaskloof<br \/>\nno, more Lekgalameetse, (called\u00a0<em>Malta<br \/>\n<\/em>then, and\u00a0<em>The Downs<\/em>). Trees hang<br \/>\nheavy, comatose with their own<br \/>\ninner workings, there are vines<br \/>\nhanging like boomslangs. I imagine<\/p>\n<p>flashes \u2013 grenadilla, snare, hungry man<br \/>\nand a silent blue swordtail butterfly<br \/>\nblinking the eyes of this upturned<br \/>\ncauldron of leaves. I find the towpath.<br \/>\nMe, three ducks and the white<br \/>\ndisturbance of that eight-foot swan-<br \/>\nshaped paddleboat stowed amongst nettles<br \/>\non the opposite bank.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t see the rain,<br \/>\nbut can see it\u2019s raining \u2013<br \/>\nthe green water receives it<br \/>\nwith tiny pale mouths, fish lips<br \/>\npulling down rain. Narrowboat<br \/>\nframed by the bridge. It\u2019s come on<br \/>\nso quietly. From nowhere<br \/>\nthe thought that it\u2019s Stalkie inside,<\/p>\n<p>Stalkie pulled straight<br \/>\nlike a king laid out on a slab, kill-wounds<br \/>\nfilled in and powdered by curators<br \/>\nof the dead. A hooded man<br \/>\nat the tiller staring ahead,<br \/>\nponcho beaded with rain.<br \/>\nI realise this myth is European.<br \/>\nIt isn\u2019t actually Stalkie in my mind,<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know Stalkie now,<br \/>\ndid he have guns, I hear<br \/>\nhe was a peaceful man, but a farmer<br \/>\nwill have a gun. I don\u2019t think of his killers,<br \/>\nI don\u2019t, they may have been desperate,<br \/>\nI heard they were from Mozambique<br \/>\nand high on drugs,\u00a0<em>for courage<\/em>\u00a0my brother<br \/>\nthought, breaking bones like they couldn\u2019t<\/p>\n<p>stop, and Stalkie, I haven\u2019t seen Stalkie<br \/>\nfor forty years. Square-shouldered boy<br \/>\nracing bare-foot with my bare-foot<br \/>\nbrother, freckle-face, snub nose,<br \/>\npocket full of goons, his tiny mother<br \/>\nteaching us to swim, big bosom<br \/>\nmaking bird-breast of her costume,<br \/>\nshe died last year \u2013<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Thank God for that<\/em>\u00a0my brother said. Her sister<br \/>\ngrew northern hemisphere azaleas,<br \/>\nmaples from America, acres<br \/>\nof European cherry blossom,<br \/>\n<em>you remember<\/em>\u00a0<em>the blossom<br \/>\n<\/em>my brother said. I remember<br \/>\nstanding ankle deep in light<br \/>\npetals cooling my feet.<\/p>\n<p>In this boat is Stalkie, metaphor<br \/>\nfor a world that once I knew<br \/>\nhere,\u00a0 in another country, this water<br \/>\na Styx, a momentary Charon in the rained-on<br \/>\nYorkshireman at the narrowboat tiller.<br \/>\nThe man nods. I lift my arm<br \/>\nwalk on quickly to Luddenden Foot,<br \/>\nturn up to Jerusalem Farm.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Greylag &nbsp;
