Walking towards the Rochdale Canal<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

August hauls deep green dreaming
\ninto the woods.
\nEven the bracken is so high and thick
\nI am up to my neck.
\nI feel its lure \u2013
\nwho doesn\u2019t desire to trust
\nin what\u2019s sprung, the emerald
\ncaves, to lean in and be lost.<\/p>\n

Clouds. Someone calling
\ntheir dog. Just here, I could be
\nin the clefts of Magoebaskloof
\nno, more Lekgalameetse, (called\u00a0Malta
\n<\/em>then, and\u00a0The Downs<\/em>). Trees hang
\nheavy, comatose with their own
\ninner workings, there are vines
\nhanging like boomslangs. I imagine<\/p>\n

flashes \u2013 grenadilla, snare, hungry man
\nand a silent blue swordtail butterfly
\nblinking the eyes of this upturned
\ncauldron of leaves. I find the towpath.
\nMe, three ducks and the white
\ndisturbance of that eight-foot swan-
\nshaped paddleboat stowed amongst nettles
\non the opposite bank.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t see the rain,
\nbut can see it\u2019s raining \u2013
\nthe green water receives it
\nwith tiny pale mouths, fish lips
\npulling down rain. Narrowboat
\nframed by the bridge. It\u2019s come on
\nso quietly. From nowhere
\nthe thought that it\u2019s Stalkie inside,<\/p>\n

Stalkie pulled straight
\nlike a king laid out on a slab, kill-wounds
\nfilled in and powdered by curators
\nof the dead. A hooded man
\nat the tiller staring ahead,
\nponcho beaded with rain.
\nI realise this myth is European.
\nIt isn\u2019t actually Stalkie in my mind,<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know Stalkie now,
\ndid he have guns, I hear
\nhe was a peaceful man, but a farmer
\nwill have a gun. I don\u2019t think of his killers,
\nI don\u2019t, they may have been desperate,
\nI heard they were from Mozambique
\nand high on drugs,\u00a0for courage<\/em>\u00a0my brother
\nthought, breaking bones like they couldn\u2019t<\/p>\n

stop, and Stalkie, I haven\u2019t seen Stalkie
\nfor forty years. Square-shouldered boy
\nracing bare-foot with my bare-foot
\nbrother, freckle-face, snub nose,
\npocket full of goons, his tiny mother
\nteaching us to swim, big bosom
\nmaking bird-breast of her costume,
\nshe died last year \u2013\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Thank God for that<\/em>\u00a0my brother said. Her sister
\ngrew northern hemisphere azaleas,
\nmaples from America, acres
\nof European cherry blossom,
\nyou remember<\/em>\u00a0the blossom
\n<\/em>my brother said. I remember
\nstanding ankle deep in light
\npetals cooling my feet.<\/p>\n

In this boat is Stalkie, metaphor
\nfor a world that once I knew
\nhere,\u00a0 in another country, this water
\na Styx, a momentary Charon in the rained-on
\nYorkshireman at the narrowboat tiller.
\nThe man nods. I lift my arm
\nwalk on quickly to Luddenden Foot,
\nturn up to Jerusalem Farm.<\/p>\n
