Year 9 TEMA<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dear Earth,<\/p>\n

Today seems great,
\nIt’s the beginning of a new year,
\nA fresh, clean slate.
\nIt’s a beginning of an era,
\nAnd the end of an old one.
\nThe decade seems bright and new,
\nBut I am here from the future;
\nI’m warning you.
\nSome things will change,
\nAnd horrifically, some will be the same,
\nGrudges of the past will be kept in tact,
\nPeople will roam the streets,
\nDecorated in face masks.
\nThe rattle of closing shop doors,
\nWill make chests tighten like shackles.
\nYour people will wake up and watch the television,
\nTo see a death toll that is only
\nRising.
\nMothers, brothers,
\nSisters, fathers,
\nAll lives taken by this merciless virus.<\/p>\n

Presidents will dub people thugs
\nFor seeking justice for an innocent life,
\nYet praise people with virtual hugs,
\nWhen they spit and cock their assault guns,
\nDemanding back their ‘normal lives’.
\nLittle hijabi girls will be found dead in the back of a river,
\nMurdered at the hand of her classmates,
\nAll because she was different.
\nBlack people dying is becoming the new statistic,
\nBut in actuality, it’s always been like this.
\nNames will be posted on Instagram Stories,
\nJust to be forgotten the next day,
\n#BLACKLIVESMATTER will be trending,
\nJust to be overtaken by new news another day.
\nPeople will shame others for rioting and looting,
\nBut suddenly the tune changes when their favourite football team loses.
\nPeople will shame others for peacefully protesting,
\nBut demand their pubs and shops to open,
\nAnd I know for a fact they would not be social distancing.<\/p>\n

It’s not a perfect world you’ve given us,
\nBut your children have something far greater than their problems and disgust:
\nCourage,
\nAnd lots of it.
\nThis world has many faults and issues that need to be tackled,
\nBut this generation knows how it needs to be handled,
\nWe will unlearn hate,
\nAnd love we will educate.
\nEven behind closed doors,
\nAnd in the middle of pandemic,
\nWe will strive for excellence,
\nChange,
\nAnd we will stamp out injustice,
\nWhenever it is in close range.<\/p>\n

The sonnets of the past told,
\n“In the old age black was not counted fair,”
\nLimitless in value, so close to gold,
\n“But now black beauty’s successive heir,”
\nThe new age must rise against a world so
\nCold,
\nTo realise the potential of the people,
\nIf they do so dare.<\/p>\n

The world you’ve given us isn’t perfect,
\nBut I’m writing to tell you,
\nThat all the strife, grief and pain
\nWill be worth it.<\/p>\n
