Cut<\/span><\/h4>\n

the lovely fairies
\n<\/span>in Sister\u2019s room
\n<\/span>have blades on their backs
\n<\/span>and lately Lee sucks lemons
\n<\/span>for their sharps
\n<\/span>looks for wounds in snow
\n<\/span>on his morning walk with Mam
\n<\/span>fantasizes he is sliced like a pear
\n<\/span>but today the blood smells real
\n<\/span>he wipes his hands on his trackies
\n<\/span>dizzy tries to walk not run
\n<\/span>because he doesn\u2019t want to scare
\n<\/span>and blooming like a cherry tree stumbles out
\n<\/span>there is a metallic grinding scream
\n<\/span>when Next Door ignites the hedge trimmer
\n<\/span>the winter sun pierces Lee\u2019s eyes
\n<\/span>blue sky sawn open
\n<\/span>in that moment the sky is too big for Lee
\n<\/span>far too big and empty
\n<\/span>he wants to find the stars
\n<\/span>wants a knock on his bedroom door
\n<\/span>wants to be red for somebody<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Cousins<\/h4>\n

The Cousins are doing their wool work
\nsitting in their blankets knitting for their
\nMothers, proud to be loved by their Mothers.
\nThe Cousins’ faces are slack like emptied
\nlungs. They remember, like their prayers, how
\ntheir Mothers make breakfast for them, let
\nthem stick their thumbs in jammy jars,
\nshelter them from the rain under skirts,
\nalways forbid them to hurt each other.<\/p>\n

They are Cousins, joining hands for their Mothers,
\nsad as dogs, their owners poorly and lame.<\/p>\n
