'Times New Roman', serif;\">It felt a bit like approaching the king<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">in the counting house we had sung about,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">the frown amidst the glowers of gold-tipped smoke <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">at the hesitant <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><i>Ten 2ps please<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">said again as the music fizzed and throbbed<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">and the lights thrilled in their circuits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">After the glance down at the tendered coin,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">judged just enough, he thumbed the lever \u2013<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">like the quick flick of a bell on a bike \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">but the impact as if a Viking<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">had just hacked a groaning coin-hoard open,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">which scattered helter-skelter down <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">and clinked into a scoop like a lazar\u2019s bowl.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">And there was always gratitude for the handful<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">that could last an afternoon, wonderment<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">at the weight greater than you had given,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">at the feeling for once that not everything<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">is treasured less for its presence than its loss. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Or so it seemed then, awaiting the next time<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">the silver would be given, the lever tipped,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">and the change sent clattering down the rim-smoothed chute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><b>Ghost Notes<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Sometimes, on the other side of the earth,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">where the road is a sword driven six months in,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">and the lettings of the school dreep away<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">like rapids into the heavier water,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">and the sharp shoulders of a chest of drawers<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">impose where a dog is not nudging for warmth,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">the crackling of the traffic on the ice,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">the potato-seller\u2019s sad, piping call<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">through cavities in the gummy snowbanks,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">and where the snow-bundled clouds, like buds<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">figuring out how to blossom, are backlit<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">like a throat clearing into no speech,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">sometimes all this can filter into a bubble<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">stung in a glass of water, like the sigh<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">of the radio off by an apron-hung chair,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">so the tick-tick twitch of the mantelpiece clock<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">ghosts the notes of her knitting, my mother there,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">undemented, forming the comfort of a jumper, <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">as if that was the sole thing that mattered,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">as if that could go on muffling everything else<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">but a snow-slit afternoon room in Japan,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">as if it could \u2013 the point \u2013 at some point \u2013 click.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Sweeney\u2019s Trees<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">When Sweeney praises the trees,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">the big-sea heaving of the oak,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">the crimson-splashed ash,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">the birch that hoards the moonlight, <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">and the alder, sheltering elder brother<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">above the briars\u2019 shady clutches,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">the whisper-shivery, wind-flashed aspen,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">the hazel full of autumn,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">and bow-backed gathers of apple trees,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">holly bringing winter\u2019s sting,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">and the blackthorn, gemmed with juicy sloes<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">that in rain outshine the rowan,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">I reach like a man to the canopy<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">for the words to breeze the boughs,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">give breath to earth, to highlight like leaves<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">in final flourish evening sun <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">against the dark heavily descending;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">but the forms have disappeared,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">which leaves me somewhere between a man<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">compacting into overspill,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">crushing the fluted body of a bird,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">and a bird panic-flitting<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">the cathedral aspiration of a man, instinct<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">there must be some way out;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">I reach as if the sheets of a psalter<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">better held the integral beauty<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">(knowing full well that they were vellum)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">of any of the deep-beloved trees <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">that lifted Sweeney\u2019s spirit into praise. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Change It
