Cavafy Translations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><b>The Bandage<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">He said that he\u2019d stumbled into a wall or fallen.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">But likely the cut on his shoulder<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">was caused by something more serious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">He stood up abruptly, reaching for some<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">photographs on a high shelf<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">that he wanted to hold. The bandage<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">loosened and the cut opened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">I dressed his shoulder again, but was slow<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">in finishing, because it caused him no pain<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">and because I liked to look at his blood. That blood<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">was the source of my longing for him.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">When he left, I found at the foot<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">of his chair a bloodied cloth, cotton,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">a cloth that looked ready for the rubbish bin<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">and that I took to my lips<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">and held there for a long time \u2013<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">the blood of longing on my lips. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><b>The Great Feast of Sosibios<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">My afternoon was stunning, simply<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">stunning. The oar touched down softly,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">stroking the Alexandrian Sea.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">Well-earned rest after morning\u2019s difficulty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">May the earth remain as innocent and benign<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">as wistful evening falls. And there, no wine,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">not a drop left in the bowl.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">Time, dear one, to drift towards the waterfall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">A wine-flushed house (that of glorious<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">Sosibios and his good wife) calls to us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">We must return to the inevitable<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">and continue our dull political struggle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><b>Prince of Western Libya<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">He was largely admired in Alexandria,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">the ten days he endured there,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">Aristomenis, son of Menelaos,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">a prince of Western Libya.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">Respectable, Greek: his name, his clothes.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">Honours were accepted, but he did<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">not seek them \u2013 out of modesty.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">He purchased Greek books,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">much history and philosophy.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">He was considered a reserved man,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">bound to thoughtful appreciation,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">and such men do not have to speak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">Except he was neither thoughtful<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">nor anything else. Another ordinary,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">silly fellow. He took a Greek name,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">dressed like a Greek, learned the A to Z<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">of carrying himself like a Greek.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">He trembled lest through fortune<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">he spoil this levelheaded impression,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">speaking Greek with such stiff barbarousness<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">the Alexandrians mocked him \u2013<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">as is their habit, dreadful people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">This is why he spoke so little,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">careful with declensions and pronunciation:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\">he was terrified.
