{"id":11293,"date":"2020-06-04T16:36:14","date_gmt":"2020-06-04T15:36:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=11293"},"modified":"2020-07-28T16:04:59","modified_gmt":"2020-07-28T15:04:59","slug":"still-changing-by-jennifer-nuttall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=11293","title":{"rendered":"<em>Still Changing<\/em>, by Jennifer Nuttall"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Still Changing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When the government told us to stay in our homes<br \/>\nI grew bricks for feet.<br \/>\nI watched each day unfold through spyhole eyes.<br \/>\nOutside of myself was a world seemingly slowed to only<br \/>\na glass-portioned sun moving shadows across empty streets,<br \/>\nand the sound of sirens just beyond my periphery.<br \/>\nMy mind was a television set that only played bad news.<br \/>\nIt told me that my hands were handles<br \/>\nthat must be disinfected until their shine had dulled.<br \/>\nNo matter how quiet my street may seem<br \/>\nthieves were lurking, so I kept my door-mouth locked<br \/>\nand prayed they would not break in.<br \/>\nIn the end I had to switch it off.<br \/>\nMy lungs had become a garden that was suddenly too small.<br \/>\nI was all kitchen.<br \/>\nMy stomach was an empty cupboard.<br \/>\nI dreamt of shopping lists.<br \/>\nAt breakfast my tongue was the dining table.<br \/>\nI had to wash my mouth out between meals<br \/>\nso it could double as a school.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jennifer Nuttall (L3)<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Still Changing When the government told us to stay in our homes I grew bricks for feet.
