Kassandra\u2019s face on my screen<br \/>\nis hardly real, she has the stretch of gum while<br \/>\nI am a mesh of nerves and unhappy glands.<\/p>\n<p>A small animal eats the muscle of my stomach<br \/>\nand thigh. I think of the whistles of pain<br \/>\nI sometimes get in my chest, how a foot<\/p>\n<p>can just cramp up; the body is nerves on nerves.<br \/>\nMy mother tenses to the left of me.<br \/>\nHer back muscles strain against a film<\/p>\n<p>of skin, will perhaps break through.<br \/>\nIf I am fibre, she is tenderloin, tissue<br \/>\nred and elastic, colour of life, not like<\/p>\n<p>yellow, not like the mushrooming tongues<br \/>\nand lungs on cigarette packets, telling me<br \/>\nmatter out of place makes the body out of place.<\/p>\n<p>Kassandra says feel the stretch, try sitting<br \/>\nall the way in it. She softens her spine<br \/>\nand settles into herself, sweet as a nut.<\/p>\n<p>She wants me rooted to the earth, then catching<br \/>\na gust, cutting air.
