homecoming<\/strong><\/h3>\n

we\u2019re back here
\nwhere we started,
\na pair of salty whelks
\nborn by the sea.<\/p>\n

the beach is vast and quiet.
\nwe talk about our escape,
\nabout how we dreamed of drifting
\nand washing up like debris, someplace new.<\/p>\n

we wanted to hide from mismatched lights
\nlining the water\u2019s edge,
\nwhere dark waves catch the colours
\nand sink them.<\/p>\n

indoors, we\u2019re curious of the outside,
\nwatch from our shells
\nthrough parted blinds, as
\ngulls swoop under streetlights,<\/p>\n

and notice the houses opposite
\nmore than before, their
\nbricks tearing through render
\nlike pink skin from a scab.<\/p>\n

my mother cuts open a pie
\nand we eat it from our knees
\non the carpet. the news is on
\nbut we\u2019ve stopped listening.<\/p>\n

we lie in a bed too small for
\nthe both of us, window open so we
\ncan hear the rush of the tide.
\nwe hold our bodies close \u2014<\/p>\n

wonder how long we will be home for.
\nwonder how we ever left.<\/p>\n
