{"id":10973,"date":"2019-09-25T21:23:45","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T20:23:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=10973"},"modified":"2019-09-26T12:13:48","modified_gmt":"2019-09-26T11:13:48","slug":"editorial-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=10973","title":{"rendered":"Editorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is a truism that Elizabeth Bishop was in the habit of waiting for decades for her material to\u00a0discover an apt form, something her friend Robert Lowell celebrated in\u00a0a poem:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Do\u00a0<br \/>\nyou still hang your words in air, ten years\u00a0<br \/>\nunfinished, glued to your notice board, with gaps\u00a0<br \/>\nor empties for the unimaginable phrase\u2013\u00a0<br \/>\nunerring Muse who makes the casual perfect?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0new\u00a0<em>Manchester Review<\/em>\u00a0has not taken\u00a0ten years to\u00a0assemble, but it is definitely overdue and we are grateful for the patience of our contributors. We are grateful, too, to feature photography from late Chinese conceptual artist Li Yuan-Chia and pieces from artist Elizabeth Price&#8217;s work &#8216;A Long Memory&#8217;. The issue includes a new essay on Bishop which finds another brilliantly ingenious example of how her work plays such original variations on autobiography. The essay, by Jonathan Ellis, offers a finely calibrated mix of ideas, biography and poetics, a kind of formal model itself\u00a0for how to write about art and artists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ellis\u2019s\u00a0Bishop is accompanied here by other Canadians, Ken\u00a0Babstock, Anne Compton, Jason\u00a0Guriel, Evan Jones and Natasha Cabot, and our international mix of Scottish, Irish, American, Australian, Kenyan, South African\u00a0and English writers.
