Why me?<\/p>\n<p>Rise above it, I told myself.<br \/>\nBe a man, I told myself.<br \/>\nI turned from flesh to stone.<br \/>\nI turned from stone to steel.<br \/>\nThen I turned to rust.<\/p>\n<p>The indifferent god<br \/>\nlifted his fist.<br \/>\nMy son sprang up,<br \/>\na shattered cherub made whole again,<br \/>\nhis smile empty,<br \/>\nhis gaze vacant,<br \/>\nhis entire being turned in on itself,<br \/>\ntrapped in a loop of exhilaration.<\/p>\n<p>Alone in the darkness<br \/>\nof our bedroom<br \/>\nmy son\u2019s mother<br \/>\nfelt no self pity.<\/p>\n<p>She died only to be<br \/>\ndragged back to life,<br \/>\na transfiguration in reverse.<\/p>\n<p>When she emerged,<br \/>\nher skin scorched,<br \/>\nher soul in tatters,<br \/>\nshe still moved with her dancer\u2019s grace,<br \/>\nholding him close,<br \/>\nclose but not too tight,<br \/>\npetrified he would break.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Transfiguration An indifferent god raised his fist and before my eyes crushed my son.
