{"id":10662,"date":"2019-09-10T11:58:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-10T10:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=10662"},"modified":"2019-09-26T11:37:53","modified_gmt":"2019-09-26T10:37:53","slug":"two-poems-57","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=10662","title":{"rendered":"Two Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>To Carolina Kostner on <em>Bol\u00e9ro<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>XXII Olympic Winter Games, Sochi<\/p>\n<p>Because I live for the comeback<br \/>\nstaged in black\u2014cold expanse waiting<br \/>\nto be writ\u2014because I love<\/p>\n<p>the way one arm lifts<br \/>\nin time to what Ravel imagined as a masterpiece<br \/>\nwith no music, repetition made magic <\/p>\n<p>only because each shift<br \/>\nintensifies, piston or hammer<br \/>\nin the ear, I love the ice that brings us <\/p>\n<p>here, across the years spent counting spins\u2014<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;an illusionist\u2019s flight of doves,<br \/>\n\t&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;or samara in the rain. <\/p>\n<p>Because I\u2019ve walked through gray cities,<br \/>\ngray futures, I love the sudden break<br \/>\nas evidence of nothing, exactly, <\/p>\n<p>but the surface of things tattooed with light<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\tbefore a cloud elides the hill. <\/p>\n<p>\tI still believe in beauty\u2014<br \/>\n\t&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\ta measured movement, a name fogged<br \/>\n\t&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\t\ton a bus pane.<\/p>\n<p>\tWhatever we love is already leaving.<br \/>\n\tWhatever we touch, dissolves.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h5>Paradise is a Bullet Train<\/h5>\n<p>The slice of a parted mouth. <\/p>\n<p>The white peafowl<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\ton a manor lawn. Honeydew steeped<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\t\tin its own sugar. <\/p>\n<p>Cold front in a high rise town.<\/p>\n<p>\tParadise is a man like plaited wire.<br \/>\n\t&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\tStripped to his bowstring<br \/>\n\t&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\t\t\tback and fevered lungs.<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\t\tSuperb, elegant hands. <\/p>\n<p>I want a man who sets sharp teeth<br \/>\n\t&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\tagainst the day like an archangel holds fire.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\t I want the level mind<br \/>\n\t&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\t\t\tthat won\u2019t give in <\/p>\n<p>to despair. Dear tongue <\/p>\n<p>weighted with parables.\tDear seam of an open shirt.<\/p>\n<p>\tParadise is a bullet train aimed at vermillion. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Hinge of a collarbone.
