{"id":10653,"date":"2019-09-10T12:53:13","date_gmt":"2019-09-10T11:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=10653"},"modified":"2019-09-26T11:31:46","modified_gmt":"2019-09-26T10:31:46","slug":"three-poems-48","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=10653","title":{"rendered":"Four Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Q&#038;A for an unfair world<\/h5>\n<p {line-height: 2 ;}>\nWill this meeting ever end?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>What are we saying goodbye to?<\/p>\n<p>Everything.<\/p>\n<p>Is the wrong person in charge?<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h5>New fashion surprise parties<\/h5>\n<p>Because surprise parties can kill,<br \/>\nespecially in the over eighties,<br \/>\na new way of surprising has been devised,<br \/>\napproved by health advisors.<\/p>\n<p>The celebrant tiptoes into the room \u2013<br \/>\nthis averts heart attacks among her friends \u2013<br \/>\nwhile they, in reply,<br \/>\nleap imperceptibly from their seats<br \/>\nwhispering surprise surprise<br \/>\nwithout any kind of punctuation.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody has their hearing aids off<br \/>\nand nobody dies.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h5>A bargain with death<\/h5>\n<p>In my last minutes I would like to forego<br \/>\nthe angelic host and instead stand on any road I know,<br \/>\nnot as that road is now, but three or five hundred years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Between the end of this world and the start of that,<br \/>\nI\u2019d like to watch handsewn shoes carry a handtied sack<br \/>\nalong a route I half-recognise, now a sandy track.<\/p>\n<p>What I have in mind is no wires, no stuff to throw away;<br \/>\nOnly an <em>isn\u2019t that?<\/em> rock beside a <em>surely that\u2019s?<\/em> shore:<br \/>\nthe place I live now, but never seen before. <\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h5>The listening Olympics<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nWe\u2019ve heard it all before<br \/>\nbut even so, we ask for more.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a bit hazy now, but we remember that:<\/p>\n<p>someone peed on her feet to keep them warm<br \/>\nsomeone\u2019s so clever he only has one friend<br \/>\nsomeone looked in rubbish bins for a book<br \/>\nsomeone wore a miniskirt while reporting a riot<br \/>\nsomeone stopped a mugger by asking how he was<br \/>\nsomeone has an unusually high number of Neanderthal genes<br \/>\nsomeone hit his wife for wanting a hot water tap in the kitchen<\/p>\n<p>and one of you found a new-born baby in the morning tide;<br \/>\nyou held her against your breast; she lives.<\/p>\n<p>Many of you say: \u2018I\u2019ve never told anyone this before\u2019<br \/>\nor: \u2018Why am I telling you this?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Speak.<br \/>\nThere is no end to what we can take in at one sitting.<br \/>\nWe have had many hearings; we no longer discriminate.<\/p>\n<p>This is the listening Olympics,<br \/>\nyou are team South Africa<br \/>\nand this is your captain,<br \/>\nlistening.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Q&#038;A for an unfair world Will this meeting ever end?
