{"id":10569,"date":"2019-09-08T17:50:51","date_gmt":"2019-09-08T16:50:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=10569"},"modified":"2019-09-26T11:41:35","modified_gmt":"2019-09-26T10:41:35","slug":"three-poems-41","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=10569","title":{"rendered":"Three Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Rehearsal<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThey look like they could be going somewhere.<br \/>\nThe bass player\u2019s bringing everything he owns.<br \/>\nThe cellos and bass park closest to the door.<br \/>\nThere\u2019s a list of their names, a place for coats.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t help thinking of toothbrushes, soap,<br \/>\nhoney wrapped for the journey in clothes,<br \/>\nthe instruments left at home to make space,<br \/>\nslowly but surely slipping out of key.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;*<br \/>\nThe clarinet player is in his rugby gear;<br \/>\nso are the two flutes, and one of the violins.<br \/>\nMusic is an interlude between sleep and play.<br \/>\nEveryone is going on somewhere from here \u2013<br \/>\nhockey, <em>Coder Dojo<\/em>, running in The Sea Field.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\t\t\t*<br \/>\nQueueing in twos to have instruments tuned<br \/>\nmakes today the day before the deluge,<br \/>\nand the orchestra is an ark of music<br \/>\nwherein two of each kind will be rescued.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\t\t\t*<br \/>\n The children don\u2019t know they are blessed.<br \/>\n\u2018Keep your eyes on me and you won\u2019t get lost.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>She says what I\u2019ve waited a lifetime to hear,<br \/>\nand she is speaking to everyone but me.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Don\u2019t look at the music at the very end\u2019 \u2013<br \/>\nshe tells them again \u2013 \u2018Look at my hands.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\t\t\t*<br \/>\nFrom this morning on,<br \/>\nthe theme from <em>Ghostbusters<\/em> will be<br \/>\nwhat it has never been \u2013<br \/>\na rest from <em>Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\t&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\t\t*<br \/>\nI would like to be able to tell them<br \/>\nhow the holiday cello became a trench cello<br \/>\nbecause the cellist, when he was drafted,<br \/>\ncould not conceive of leaving it behind.<\/p>\n<p>It is shaped like an ammunition box.<br \/>\nInside are none of the scrolls or curves<br \/>\nyou\u2019d expect, but strings and pegs,<br \/>\nlike the things you\u2019d use to put up a fence,<\/p>\n<p>a detachable neck, all of the extremeties<br \/>\ncontained, able, like the parts of a rifle,<br \/>\nto be assembled in a matter of minutes<\/p>\n<p>to play <em>Jerusalem, Keep the Home Fires<br \/>\nBurning<\/em>.
