{"id":10282,"date":"2019-02-02T21:38:27","date_gmt":"2019-02-02T20:38:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=10282"},"modified":"2019-02-21T15:02:12","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T14:02:12","slug":"two-poems-52","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themanchesterreview.co.uk\/?p=10282","title":{"rendered":"Two Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Eagle River, 2017<\/h5>\n<p>Home one morning to find my<br \/>\nhat and gloves hard with frost on the spade handle.<br \/>\nMaybe you\u2019d take my silence for a green<br \/>\nthe sun gives to the shadowgrass.<br \/>\nAnd, as you boil the kettle to melt the drain<br \/>\nI\u2019d watch a whole life come and go<br \/>\nin the very place I waited:<br \/>\npruning shears, a wheelbarrow,<br \/>\na rake, a hose wound halfway \u2013<\/p>\n<p>there you go \u2013<br \/>\nbending to where a stepladder,<br \/>\nunfolded all summer, made perfect<br \/>\nstepping stones in the hard-packed light.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h5>Four Words<\/h5>\n<p>I owned a house by the sea,<br \/>\na cobbled walk, a hedge on one side<br \/>\nof a sloping garden with a kitchen-view<\/p>\n<p>onto beach where,<br \/>\na mile or so further, an ocean began,<br \/>\nand, to this day begins.<\/p>\n<p>In his ninety-first summer<br \/>\nmy father turned up at the front door with<br \/>\na parrot named Blue who spoke four words:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Enough\u2019, \u2018Go\u2019, \u2018Help\u2019, \u2018Never\u2019.<br \/>\nI fed them, dressed him,<br \/>\nbathed him, let him talk when he wanted.<\/p>\n<p>After, it could be next week,<br \/>\nor tomorrow,<br \/>\nI\u2019ll take the cobbled walk, its mile<\/p>\n<p>of sand and slope, those dunes,<br \/>\nand swim in the same direction<br \/>\nthat parrot flew one morning when,<\/p>\n<p>with kitchen window open, cage open,<br \/>\nI spoke a word of his,<br \/>\na hooked claw on first finger, lifting,<\/p>\n<p>and listened as he repeated back,<br \/>\njust once,<br \/>\nthen took to the air, just once.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eagle River, 2017 Home one morning to find my hat and gloves hard with frost on the spade handle.
