Where do we<br \/>\ndoubt what it means to follow,<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nwhat it means to lead, like water<br \/>\nsettling behind the swimmer,<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nas if the body encroached, wanted<br \/>\nto talk, then spread its sleep?<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h5>Forgiveness<\/h5>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\nWhat is it, then, for the clouds to open and<br \/>\nlet the sun through;\u00a0 too easy, too objective,<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nwaiting for some contrail to cross the blue<br \/>\nand show that there is one idea moving to<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nanother, like a cross-headed screw turned<br \/>\ntoo tightly into the door shredding dust<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nout of the conti-board; a chorus which meets<br \/>\nout beyond the lozenges of stained glass<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nas they parade along the inside of the church,<br \/>\nthrough which we might have seen the trees<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nsway and rock, the tide receding, rocks exposed,<br \/>\na whole new island forgiving us from the shallow water.\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h5>The Map Chest<\/h5>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nAnd as I bent over the large top<br \/>\nof the map chest to tidy folders, papers,<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nplastic wallets, the window rose above<br \/>\nme; across the valley, green meadows<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nfell, a church, half-hidden, shouldered out<br \/>\nonto the skyline, its curt brickwork<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\npitted with windows like light bulbs<br \/>\nwaiting for the filament to burn out.\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nAnd when the map chest was tidy and<br \/>\nrelocked, and when the church was spilled<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nas if its flesh were sand, the rain came<br \/>\nover the hill, like water blown over the heel<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nof my hand, the hand that was no good there,<br \/>\nhowever, and no good anywhere else.\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crawl Space \u00a0 The railway track divides where the road slopes up beside a genteel, \u00a0 Georgian terrace.
