Four poems

A Good Fence

Sound of a shovel nicking dirt.
Voices of labourers
sinking posts into wet cement.

Sibilance of aspens in the wind.
Soft-spoken voices speaking
Spanish under soft-spoken aspens.

Shriek of a chainsaw ripping wood.
Clang of a hammer striking nails.
Shovel thunk against aspen suckers.

Report of a stapler fixing wire.
Laughter bubbling like water
down a bed of loaf-shaped boulders.

Sound of a gate bolt shot.
Sound of a tailgate dropped.
Sigh of the gathered up tools.
